Job summary

Sylvania is seeking a Groundskeeper to maintain safe and attractive district grounds. You will work under supervision to mow, water, plant, and maintain athletic fields and landscaping, including sprinkler systems support.

Responsibilities include weed control, fertilizer application, and seasonal upkeep. Physical effort and outdoor work are required, with frequent lifting and exposure to weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Reading and following written instructions.
• Clear verbal communication with team members.
• Ability to operate tractors and landscaping equipment safely.
• Proficiency with riding or power mowers and hand tools.

Responsibilities

• Mow and detail all district grounds, including athletic fields.
• Care for trees, shrubs, and flowers: water, prune, fertilize, mulch, weed.
• Plant shrubs and vegetation and maintain beds.
• Prepare athletic fields for games, including chalking fields.
• Water grounds and apply fertilizer as needed.
• Collect leaves and rubbish; dispose of waste from facilities.
• Assist with inspection, repair, and installation of sprinkler systems.

Job description

Primary Purpose:

Maintain safe and attractive grounds and landscaping for the district. Works under the direct supervision of the Lead Groundskeeper and general supervision of the Director of Maintenance.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

• Valid Texas driver’s license
• Ability to lift 50 pounds

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Ability to read and understand written instructions
• Ability to communicate (verbally)
• Ability to operate tractor and landscaping equipment
• Ability to operate riding or power mower, power tools, and hand tools

Experience:

None

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Mow and detail all district grounds, including athletic fields.
2. Care for trees, shrubs, and flowers by watering, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.
3. Plant shrubs and vegetation.
4. Assist with the preparation of athletic fields for games, including chalking fields.
5. Water grounds and apply fertilizer.
6. Collect and dispose of leaves, dirt, rubbish, and refuse from district facilities.
7. Assist with the inspection, repair, and installation of sprinkler systems.

Safety

1. Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures.
2. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
3. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
4. Help keep vehicle, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
5. Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventive maintenance as needed.

Other

1. Transport workers and equipment to work sites throughout the district.

Equipment Used:

Tractor and mower, riding and power mower, gas-powered weed trimmer, blower, edger, sprayer, striping machine, garden and hand tools, posthole auger, aerator. Light truck or van.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, heavy lifting and carrying. Work outside and around moving objects or vehicles, and on slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Exposure to loud noises, extreme temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals (herbicides and fertilizer) and materials. Frequent district-wide travel.
