Job summary

City of Wilmington is seeking a Grounds Technician to maintain parks, athletic fields, and landscaping. You’ll mow, edge, weed eat, prune, clean shelters, and perform janitorial duties while engaging professionally with the public and staff.

Responsibilities include setting up for events, keeping records and worksheets, performing basic equipment maintenance, and assisting other departments during weather emergencies.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and understand written instructions and basic processes.
• Class C Driver’s License is required.
• Willingness to work before, during, and after emergencies or disasters.
• Basic computer literacy for timekeeping and training records.

Responsibilities

• Mow grass, edge, weed eat, pick up trash, fertilize, clean facilities and turf.
• Assist with events setup and natural disaster clean up as needed.
• Open/secure facilities, operate lights, and manage sound equipment when required.
• Provide friendly customer service and support athletic team requests.

You’ll help maintain City parks, landscaping projects, and athletic fields by mowing, weed eating, edging, pruning, removing trash, performing janitorial tasks, and caring for turf—all while interacting professionally with the public and staff.

You’ll assist with setting up for special events, keep accurate records and daily worksheets, perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, help clean up after weather emergencies, and support other departments whenever needed

JOB DUTIES:

• Performs general maintenance by mowing grass, edging, weed eating, picking up trash, applying pesticides, trimming landscape, cleaning bathrooms and shelters, removing trash cans, watering, and fertilizing.
• Assists with special projects by setting up for events and assisting with natural disaster clean up.
  

Positions assigned to the Athletics division may also be responsible for the following:

• Opens and secures facilities by operating alarm system, locking doors and gates, turning off and on stadium lights, and operating sound equipment and scoreboards.
• Provides customer service to the public by assisting with athletic team requests, and working with citizens to meet their needs.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. No experience is required.
• Class C Driver’s License.
• Ability to work before, during, and after emergencies and/or natural disasters.
• Basic computer literacy as necessitated for timekeeping, performance documentation and online training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifts and moves up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 25 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. constantly.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position generally requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
