Job description

  • A high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license, excellent driving record, and must be able to pass a background check clear of criminal history are required.
  • Must possess working knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and the safe operation of equipment such as reel mowers, front‑end loaders, mowers, weed eaters, and related tools.
  • Must possess knowledge of proper handling and application of fertilizers, herbicides, and related materials.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and district property, lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds, and perform repetitive physical tasks, including hands‑on work as required.
  • Leadership skills necessary to coordinate, direct, coach, and hold the grounds team accountable for performance, safety, and service excellence
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across departments.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Grounds Operations and Daily Oversight: Maintain campus grounds to ensure a clean, safe, and visually appealing environment at all times. Plan, assign, and adjust daily work activities and assignments for grounds staff to meet operational and seasonal needs. Develop written procedures for each job and specify the equipment to be used for each procedure. Mow turf areas, maintain landscaped beds, and oversee overall campus grounds appearance. Move furniture and set up classrooms as needed. Assign special work to employees as needed.

Preventive Maintenance and Seasonal Operations: Install, maintain, inspect, and coordinate repair of grounds equipment, including sprinkler systems, to ensure safe and effective operation. Lead seasonal operations, including irrigation, landscaping, fertilization, leaf removal, and weed control. Oversee snow and ice removal operations, including sanding and salting of campus roadways, parking areas, and sidewalks, to ensure safe campus access during inclement weather.

Records, Safety, and Compliance: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to equipment maintenance, chemical use, safety inspections, and grounds operations. Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and proactive risk management among grounds staff. Order necessary fertilizers, herbicides, and related materials, and ensure proper handling, storage, and application in accordance with safety guidelines and district procedures. Ensure timely reporting and documentation of safety incidents, equipment failures, and operational concerns.

Coordination, Planning, and Resource Management: Coordinate grounds activities with the Executive Director, Planning and Operations, and collaborate with maintenance, custodial, and transportation teams. Assist with short‑ and long‑range planning related to campus grounds and exterior infrastructure. Manage vendors and contractors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to district standards. Order and manage supplies and equipment while supporting responsible budget management and resource stewardship. Assist in the inventory process.

Staff Development and Training: Hire, lead, and develop grounds staff, including seasonal staff, by fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism. Reinforce safe work practices, ethical behavior, and strong work habits through coaching, modeling, and feedback. Provide training and safety instruction related to equipment use, chemical handling, and grounds maintenance practices. Conduct timely and constructive performance evaluations in alignment with district guidelines.

Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for improvement in grounds processes, safety practices, and facility operations, and implement effective solutions collaboratively.

Compliance: Abide by all policies and procedures adopted by the Meridian Technology Center Board of Education.

Organizational Advocacy: Act as a positive advocate for Meridian Technology Center by demonstrating pride in the organization as a place to work and learn, and by speaking positively about programs, staff, and the learning environment in all interactions.

Other Duties: Complete other duties and projects assigned by the Superintendent or Executive Director, Planning and Operations.

This position operates primarily outdoors and is regularly exposed to weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and varying terrain. Occasional office work is required for planning, coordination, and documentation.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and move items over 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Hours

Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Must be willing to accept flexible work hours or work an alternative schedule when necessary to respond to facility emergencies outside of normal work hours and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of students, staff, and district property.

12‑month position

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

The Grounds Supervisor will be evaluated on the previously listed responsibilities to determine satisfactory compliance. These evaluations will determine salary increases and career advancement possibilities.

LOCATION

The primary work location is the Main Campus in Stillwater, OK, with responsibility to perform support local learning sites and campuses within MTC’s district as needed.
