Job summary

Calvert County Government is seeking an experienced grounds maintenance supervisor to lead care and upkeep of County facilities. This hands-on role combines leadership, teamwork, and skilled grounds maintenance to keep properties safe and attractive.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree required in landscaping management or related field.
  • Five years of progressive grounds maintenance experience with supervisory or lead roles.
  • Valid Class A restricted commercial driver's license and Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Pesticide applicator certifications for turf/ornamental/right-of-way within six months.

Job Description

Calvert County Government is seeking an experienced grounds maintenance professional to help lead the care and maintenance of County facilities and properties. This hands-on position combines leadership, teamwork, and skilled grounds maintenance while providing an opportunity to serve the community by helping ensure County properties remain safe, attractive, and well maintained. Performs supervisory and skilled grounds maintenance work in support of County facilities and properties. The work involves coordinating and participating in grounds maintenance activities, assigning and reviewing work of grounds maintenance staff, monitoring maintenance operations, and assisting with seasonal and routine landscaping services. The position supports maintenance operations through scheduling, field inspections, equipment oversight, and coordination with other departments and contractors. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Buildings and Grounds Division Chief.

Essential Job Functions

Coordinates and reviews the daily work assignments of grounds maintenance personnel engaged in maintaining County-owned grounds, landscaped areas, parking lots, and related facilities. Participates in and monitors grounds maintenance activities including mowing, trimming, landscaping, snow and ice removal, irrigation maintenance, pest management, and general grounds upkeep. Conducts routine inspections of grounds maintenance activities and reports operational issues or deficiencies to management. Assists management in scheduling seasonal grounds maintenance activities and coordinating operational support services. Coordinates contractor access and monitors contracted work activities for compliance with established specifications and operational requirements. Tracks inventory usage and submits requests for supplies, materials, and equipment needed for maintenance operations. Monitors the condition, maintenance, and safe operation of grounds maintenance equipment, vehicles, hand tools, and power tools. Monitors work activities for compliance with established environmental, safety, and operational procedures. Responds to routine service requests and assists in resolving operational concerns involving grounds maintenance services. Provides training and guidance to staff regarding operational procedures, equipment use, and workplace safety practices. Maintains records and documentation related to maintenance activities, inspections, inventories, and operational services. Other Duties Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of -- Grounds maintenance methods and practices including landscaping, turf maintenance, irrigation systems, and seasonal maintenance activities.
  • Safe operation and maintenance of landscaping equipment, hand tools, power tools, and maintenance vehicles.
  • Applicable environmental and workplace safety procedures related to grounds maintenance operations.
  • Basic supervisory practices including work assignment, training, and monitoring employee performance.
  • Ability to -- Coordinate and review the work of grounds maintenance personnel.
  • Operate and monitor landscaping and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Follow and enforce established operational and safety procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with County staff, contractors, and the public.
  • Maintain records and prepare routine reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Required Qualifications
  • Training and/or Education: Associate’s degree in landscaping management or a related field.
  • Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in building and grounds maintenance work, including supervisory or lead worker experience.
  • Licenses or Certificates: Valid Class A restricted commercial driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations. Must obtain pesticide applicator certifications Maryland Department of Agriculture for turf, ornamental, and right-of-way within six months.
  • Special Requirements: Operation of County owned vehicle. Subject to emergency call-back and seasonal operational assignments. Subject to background investigation.
Physical Demands

Work requires prolonged standing and walking; walking over rough or uneven terrain; repeated bending, stooping, crouching, stretching, and reaching; operation of landscaping and maintenance equipment; climbing ladders; and lifting or moving heavy objects associated with grounds maintenance operations. Work also requires operation of keyboard devices and vehicles.

Unusual Demands

Work involves exposure to weather extremes, dirt, dust, noise, vibrations, landscaping chemicals, and potentially hazardous equipment. Employee may be required to participate in snow and ice removal activities, seasonal assignments, and emergency response operations outside of normal work hours.

Compensation Steps

Pay rate: $39.24 - $45.03 per hour; $71,417 - $81,955 annually Grade 724, full-time position, 35 hours per week Department of Public Works, Position closing date: September 4, 2026

This position allows for telework, meaning the employee may be able to work from home or another offsite location for part of the workweek, but they are still required to come into the office regularly. This arrangement is at the supervisor's discretion and may change based on business needs.
