Opportunity:

The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for the effective management of all landscaping and grounds maintenance activities. This role requires expertise in irrigation systems, pest control for turf and ornamentals, and disease identification in plants. The supervisor will also handle material ordering, scheduling, and at times perform hands‑on tasks alongside the team. A key aspect of this role includes testing irrigation systems and conducting yearly evaluations for staff. The successful candidate will be required to obtain an LLO pesticide license within the first 90 days of employment.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership and Supervision:

  • Supervise and mentor grounds maintenance staff, providing guidance and support to enhance skills and efficiency.

  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for team members, identifying areas for improvement and professional development.

Landscaping and Maintenance:

  • Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of landscaped areas, ensuring adherence to quality and design specifications.

  • Participate in hands‑on maintenance tasks when necessary to demonstrate best practices.

Irrigation Management:

  • Design, install, and maintain irrigation systems, ensuring efficient water usage and optimal plant health.

  • Regularly test and evaluate irrigation systems for functionality and efficiency.

Pest Control and Disease Management:

  • Identify pests and diseases affecting turf and ornamental plants, implementing integrated pest management strategies.

  • Develop treatment plans for pest control and disease management in compliance with regulations.

Material Ordering and Inventory Management:

  • Order necessary landscape supplies, including plants, herbicides, fertilizers, and equipment.

  • Manage inventory levels to ensure all required materials are available for maintenance tasks.

Scheduling and Project Management:

  • Create and manage work schedules for grounds maintenance staff to ensure timely completion of tasks.

  • Prioritize and assign daily activities based on project needs and environmental conditions.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, pest control applications, and inventory management.

  • Prepare reports on grounds maintenance operations for management review.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all operations comply with safety regulations and industry standards.

  • Conduct safety training sessions and promote a culture of safety among team members.

Compensation


The hourly range for this role is up to $20.00. The final offer will be based on the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience, as well as applicable state regulations, internal equity, and business needs, and may fall outside of the stated range.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; degree in horticulture, landscape management, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years in grounds maintenance or landscaping, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role

Required licenses, certificates, and/or security clearances:

  • Obtain an LLO pesticide license within the first 90 days of employment, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations.

  • Relevant certifications in pesticide application and irrigation management preferred.

  • Candidates will be expected to obtain a Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pesticide License (LLO) by the State of Florida within the first 90 days of employment. We are excited to share that Embry‑Riddle will cover the cost for the Grounds Supervisor to obtain a Limited Lawn and Ornamental License.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, US driver’s license.

  • Must meet the University’s standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):

    • Three (3) or more at‑fault accidents and/or moving violations in the previous 36 months.

    • Two (2) or more at‑fault accidents or two (2) or more moving violations in the past year.

    • Conviction for driving while impaired (DWl, DUl within the last five (5) years).

    • Conviction for death by vehicle, hit and run, racing, careless and reckless driving, implied consent in the previous five (5) years.

    • Serious violations result in immediate disqualification and revocation of driver privileges. The following are examples of serious violations:

      • Speeding over 15 mph of the posted limit, driving under the Influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless or careless driving, Use of vehicle in (drug trafficking, reckless homicide, soliciting), unlawful use of weapons, driving under suspension or revocation, fleeing a police officer, vehicle theft, Improper or illegal lane change, following too close, and passing a stopped school bus while stop sign is engaged.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of landscaping practices, turf management, and ornamental horticulture.

  • Proficient in irrigation systems design, maintenance, and testing.

  • Familiarity with pest control methods and plant disease identification.

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.

  • Excellent organizational and scheduling skills.

  • Proficient in computer applications for scheduling, record keeping, and inventory management.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Detail‑oriented with a commitment to high‑quality standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Physical ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.

  • Flexibility to work occasional weekends and holidays as needed.
