Job summary

The City of Elizabeth City seeks a grounds maintenance worker to perform semi-skilled tasks in parks and facilities, including operating small engine equipment, maintaining playgrounds, benches and landscaping, and supporting community spaces.

Under close supervision, you will inspect and service equipment, mow and edge lawns, prune trees and shrubs, perform minor repairs, and complete related duties with safety and reliability as priorities.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School diploma or GED and six months of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or operating small engine equipment.
• Ability to perform light to moderate physical work and operate basic groundskeeping tools.

The purpose of this job is to perform semi-skilled work in a variety of grounds maintenance assignments, operating specialized equipment and other work as required.

This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

• Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

• Inspects and maintains playground equipment, benches, and tables.
• Maintains park lawns and landscaping; mows, edges, and trims grass; prunes trees and shrubs.
• Maintains and services equipment.
• Performs related work as required.

Physical Demands

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

• Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
• Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
• Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
• Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
• Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
