Job summary

Dorchester County in South Carolina is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform light to medium equipment operation and manual labor in maintaining county grounds and rights-of-way, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing and carpentry tasks.

This is a full-time role with a Monday–Friday schedule; availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays during emergencies is expected; a valid driver’s license is required. You will keep records, use tools, and follow safety standards to ensure quality work.

Qualifications

• One year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to frequently operate light to medium equipment and perform manual labor in the maintenance of County grounds and rights-of-way; to maintain assigned equipment; and to perform other work as required. This position also includes performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, including electrical, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and carpentry.

This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs grounds keeping work, including but not limited to installing landscape materials, mowing grass, applying fertilizers and pesticides, removing weeds, edging driveways and walkways, trimming hedges, pruning shrubs and trees, planting flowers, etc.
• Repairs various plumbing systems and equipment including, but not limited to, bathroom fixtures, water heaters/coolers, water lines, valves, drain lines, leaks, water fountains, etc.
• Assists with the maintenance and repair of electrical components and equipment including, but not limited to, general electrical wiring, electrical outlets, switches, breakers, light fixtures, ballasts, circuits, etc.; changes light bulbs as needed.
• May run wires for computers, outlets, switches, etc.
• Operates light-to-medium equipment to assist with grounds keeping work including but not limited to; mowers, weed eaters, tractors, trucks, and edger’s. May occasionally use heavy equipment.
• Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required. Manually loads/unloads materials onto vehicles.
• Keeps streets and rights-of-way clean and free of debris; picks up trash; assists with the collection and disposal of bulky trash, debris, and limbs.
• Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of County facilities with respect to electrical, HVAC, plumbing and carpentry. Puts up and/or repairs dry wall; performs carpentry related duties.
• Changes ceiling tiles; replaces carpet; installs stair treads; works with concrete; moves desks and chairs; inspects fire extinguishers and elevators; fixes door chimes; fixes doors.
• Performs routine repair work or parts replacement; and performs routine maintenance work as needed.
• Paints building interiors and exteriors as required.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
• Maintains accurate records on maintenance/repair work completed.
• Performs all work in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations and standards of safety and quality; ensures the timely completion of all assignments.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

One year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications, Certifications and Licenses:

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
