Job summary

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell, OH, is seeking a hands-on maintenance associate. The role starts at $15 per hour and involves grounds upkeep, event support, and light technical tasks to keep the park clean and safe.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent, be able to lift heavy items, and be available on weekends and holidays. A valid driver’s license and maintenance experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Maintenance experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
• Ability to climb ladders and work in high or enclosed spaces.
• Able to operate motorized equipment.
• Able to perform heavy physical work for extended periods.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Availability on weekends and holidays is mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Maintains Zoo grounds, including litter removal and cleaning of tables, benches, restrooms, and walkways.
• Hangs and takes down light strands for nighttime events such as Wildlights.
• Assists with maintenance projects including painting, fence/bench repairs, snow shoveling, and general repairs.
• Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and tents for events and performs basic office duties.
• Provides support for special events such as Zoofari and Jazzoo.
• Keeps shop area and equipment clean and maintained.
• Ensures safety of staff and visitors through proper safety training around animals and equipment.
• Interacts with guests, answers questions, and gives directions.
• Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks when possible.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Maintains Zoo grounds (e.g. picks up litter/manure and cleans tables/benches/ restrooms/walkways).
• Hangs and takes down light strands and shapes, which create special effects for nighttime events (e.g. Wildlights, Zoofari).
• Assists with special maintenance projects (painting, fence repair, bench repair, snow shoveling, general repairs).
• Sets up and takes down tables/chairs/tents for special events and performs administrative office duties.
• Provides support for all special events (e.g. Zoofari/Jazzoo).
• Maintains shop area and equipment (e.g. washing, routine maintenance).
• Assures safety of self, the collection, staff and visitors through proper safety training and techniques around the animals, equipment and vehicles.
• Interacts with guests (e.g. answers questions, gives directions).
• Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
• Performs other duties assigned.
• Posted schedule may be subject to change based on operational needs such as weather condition, guest attendance and department needs.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Maintenance experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
• Able to climb ladders and work in high and/or enclosed spaces.

• Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, rain).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
• Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior.
• Able to maintain appropriate employee appearance (see uniform guidelines in the employee handbook).
