Job description

The Grounds Laborer performs tasks that require mainly physical abilities and effort involving little or no specialized skill or prior work experience. The following tasks are typical of this occupation:

1. Load and unload trucks, and other conveyances;
2. Move supplies and materials to proper locations by wheelbarrows or hand trucks;
3. Stack materials for storage or binning;
4. Collect refuse and salvageable materials;
5. Dig, fill, and tamp earth excavations;
6. Level ground using pick, shovel, tamper, and rake;
7. Shovel concrete and clean culverts and ditches;
8. Cut trees and brush;
9. Operate power lawn mowers;
10. Move and arrange heavy pieces of office and household furniture, equipment, and appliances;
11. Move heavy pieces of automotive, medical engineering, and other machinery and equipment;
12. Pick up leaves and trash.

The Grounds Laborer also performs additional responsibilities including:

• Using lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, clippers, and edging tools to trim and shape hedges and shrubs;
• Spraying lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide, and planting grass, flowers, and trees;
• Removing or spraying weeds with approved pesticides;
• Performing pressure washing, watering lawns, and shrubs during dry periods;
• Cleaning and repairing fences, gates, benches, and other structures;
• Repairing and maintaining irrigation systems;
• Cleaning facilities and parking lots;
• Following safety and quality control procedures;
• Participating in on-call schedules and performing other related duties as needed.

Qualifications include:

• At least 1 year of experience in grounds maintenance or equivalent; knowledge of tools, equipment, and safety practices;
• High school diploma or equivalent, or 1 year of relevant experience;
• Valid California Driver’s License;
• Knowledge of mechanical systems and safety precautions;
• Ability to work from specifications and instructions;
• Ability to maintain records.

Physical demands include frequent exposure to extreme weather, standing, reaching, walking, bending, climbing, and other physical activities as detailed. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 0700-1530, with occasional shifts, overtime, and possible travel. The applicant must demonstrate competency during a 45-day probationary period.
