Job summary

The Diocese of Grand Rapids is seeking a full-time Grounds Crew member to assist with the preparation for burials while maintaining the sacredness of the cemetery grounds. The position involves various duties, including mowing grass, pruning trees, and assisting with entombments.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation of burial sites according to section, lot, and plot number.
  • Assist with the placement of burial vaults.
  • Set up canopy and arrange folding chairs for burial service.
  • Mow grass using hand mower or riding lawn mower.
  • Prune shrubs, trim trees, and perform other landscaping projects.
  • Drive vehicles such as backhoe, trucks, and tractors.

Job description

Broad statement of responsibilities:

All grounds crew members work closely with the Sexton. This role involves assisting with the preparation for burials and assisting with providing respectful and efficient services while maintaining the sacredness of the cemetery grounds.

Specific duties:
  • Assist in preparation of burial sites-locate grave site according to section, lot, and plot number. Mark area to be excavated.
  • Assist with the placement of burial vaults either in the grave or around it.
  • Positions casket-lowering device on grave, cover dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet.
  • Set up canopy and arrange folding chairs to prepare the site for burial service.
  • Mow grass using hand mower or riding lawn mower.
  • Prune shrubs, trim trees, and perform other landscaping projects using hand tools or power tools.
  • Remove leaves and other debris from graves, using leaf blowers and weed whackers.
  • May drive vehicles such as backhoe, trucks, and tractors.
  • May repair and maintain tools and equipment, using mechanical knowledge and necessary tools.
  • Assist with entombments and the opening/closing of the mausoleum space using hand tools.
  • Assist with seasonal items such as the removal of flowers and the turning down of vases in the fall.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or directed by the Managing Director, Operations Manager, or Sexton.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be fluent in English and have reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to work in ALL types of weather.
  • Be respectful of all people and their family regardless of race, creed, or religion.
  • Flexible availability includes some Saturdays.
  • Able to lift at least 100 lbs.
  • Mechanically inclined.
  • Able to use riding lawnmowers, weed whips. Able to learn how to use a backhoe.
  • HS diploma or GED
  • Employment in and by the Diocese of Grand Rapids is substantially different from secular employment.
