Job summary

Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange is seeking a Grounds Worker I to perform interments and assist in the Christian Funeral Rite of Committal, while maintaining cemetery grounds and facilities with respect. This role requires safe practices, knowledge of interment procedures, and ability to operate lowering devices and equipment.

Primary duties include setting up memorials, assisting visitors, and performing general grounds maintenance.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of landscaping experience
• Possess and maintain a valid CA Driver’s License and current Auto Insurance
• Ability to understand safety training and follow safety programs
• History of maintaining respectful working relationships

Responsibilities

• Observe safe working practices at all times
• Follow Interment Procedures as written and trained
• Seal vault lids, operate casket and vault lowering devices
• Apply casket protectors and seal/ventilate crypts
• Report safety concerns to Supervisor or Manager
• Read cemetery maps and locate graves
• Set up and relocate tent frames and canopies
• Inspect tools and daily equipment for safety and maintenance
• Operate motorized equipment and monitor fluid/pressure levels
• Assist visitors with questions and refer to Supervisor/Office when needed
• Maintain cemetery grounds: mowing, trimming, hedging, leveling
• Available to work weekends, overtime, and holidays
• Perform other tasks as needed

POSITION TITLE: Grounds Worker I

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

DEPARTMENT: Cemeteries

REPORTS TO: Cemetery Supervisor and Manager

PAY RANGE: $20-23 per hour

SCHEDULE: 40 weekly hours

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None

• Cemetery Management, Staff, Administrators, Family Service Counselors, Priests, Parishes, Pastoral Center Staff
• Visitors, Vendors, Mortuaries, Security Personnel

Summary Overview

Grounds Workers represent the Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange and are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church. Their primary responsibility is performing interments and assisting in the Christian Funeral Rite of Committal and burial including maintaining the cemetery grounds and facilities with respect and decorum.

Essential Functions

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

• Observe safe working practices at all times
• Follow Interment Procedures as written and trained, copy attached
• Ability to properly seal vault lids, operate casket, and vault lowering devices.
• Apply casket protectors, sealing and ventilating crypts.
• Promptly report any observed lapses, errors, or safety concerns to Supervisor or Manager
• Ability to read cemetery maps and find grave locations
• Set up, break down, and relocate tent frames and canopies
• Inspect tools and equipment used daily for safe operating condition, proper maintenance
• Check motorized equipment used daily for proper maintenance including fluid and pressure levels, refill if needed
• Participate in Safety Training
• Assist visitors with questions and concerns, refer to Supervisor or Office when appropriate
• Treat coworkers and visitors with respect at all times
• Effectively communicate with coworkers and supervisors verbally or with radios
• Properly install and reinstall Memorials, Plaques, and Flower Vases
• Perform cemetery maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, hedging and leveling
• Available to work weekends, overtime, and selected holidays.
• Performs other work related tasks.

Required

• Possess and maintain a valid CA Driver’s License and current Auto Insurance
• Basic knowledge of landscaping, irrigation, building and grounds maintenance
• Ability to understand safety training and follow compliance with established Safety Program
• History of maintaining effective and respectful working relationships
• Minimum of one year of landscaping experience

• Advanced skills such as equipment repair/maintenance, welding, irrigation

Typical Working Conditions:

Generally outdoors with exposure to various and extreme weather conditions. Often working around heavy equipment and excavations. May work in confined spaces Work may deal with a high level of emotion from visitors.
