Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a pathology support technician to perform grossing, dissection and dictation of surgical specimens. You will manage case accessions in the LIS, prepare cassettes and assist with autopsy-related tasks in a busy hospital pathology setting.

The role requires an Associates Degree in Laboratory Science, strong anatomy knowledge and solid communication skills, with weekend/holiday on-call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in a Laboratory Science meeting CLIA high complexity testing.
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Able to lift/move bodies with mechanical lift assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform grossing, dissection and dictation of surgical specimens as assigned.
  • Accessions cases into the hospital LIS and prepare specimens for transfer.
  • Register, troubleshoot labeling issues and coordinate with PA supervisor as needed.
  • Maintain morgue, autopsy suite and storage areas in a clean, organized manner.
  • Rotate weekend and holiday on call as required.

Responsible for performing all technical aspects of receiving, accessioning, dissection and dictating of surgical specimen types within their assigned competency level. Expands knowledge of the disease process in order to master specimens of increasing complexity. Ensures quality, consistency, accuracy, and efficiency of specimen prosection. Assists in autopsy functions including transfer of decedent to/from autopsy suite, assisting in morgue inventory/reconciliation and troubleshooting autopsy consent issues. Performs other routine technical procedures and general laboratory, frozen section room and autopsy suite maintenance.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Performs all technical aspects of grossing, dissection and dictating of surgical specimens using a variety of laboratory materials, chemicals and equipment, according to hospital policies and procedures. This can include specimen photography, specimen radiography and slide scanning system.
  • Receives specimens from couriers, read manifests to verify appropriate count, maintains specimen integrity and patient identification. Goes to O.R. or certain clinics if deemed necessary to pick up specimens.
  • Accurately accessions all cases into hospital LIS and ensures that all specimens are received, prints barcoded cassettes, and prepares specimens for transfer to other laboratories.
  • Answers telephone and identifies and troubleshoots registration, specimen and labeling problems, files CRM when necessary. Elevates more serious issues to PA supervisor.
  • Disposes biohazardous waste materials, maintains chemical waste storage areas in accordance with all hospital, local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Maintains surgical and autopsy specimen storage area in a clean organized fashion daily.
  • Cleans and maintains the autopsy suite, morgue and equipment, disposes of dirty linens and maintains an orderly appearance daily. Maintains temperature charts for cold room, refrigerators and freezers.
  • Support diening and autopsy operations by troubleshooting autopsy consent issues, liaison between patient access services and decedent affairs. Maintains morgue inventory for maximum efficiency.
  • Assists pathology attendings, pathology residents, pathologists' assistants or other staff as requested.
  • Maintains grossing room for cleanliness, daily maintenance and inventory.
  • Maintains frozen section for cleanliness, daily maintenance, inventory and assists in frozen sections.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders, purchases and store equipment and supplies in an organized manor
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Reviews, assists with lab accreditation preparation.
  • Communication with histology department and assists in loading of tissue processors.
  • Responsible for inventory and organization of pathology departments teaching specimens.
  • Performs weekly morgue inspection for Decedent Affairs Coordinator.
  • Rotating weekend and holiday on call.
Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
  • Required: Associates Degree in a Laboratory Science, which meets the requirements for high complexity testing as defined by CLIA '88 regulations
Experience/Skills:
  • Required: Basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Required: Ability to lift/move bodies with assistance of mechanical lift.
  • Required: Basic computer skills.
  • Required: Strong communication skills.
Preferred :
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working in an anatomic or hospital pathology lab, funeral home or autopsy lab is strongly preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
