Job summary

Fulgent Therapeutics LLC is seeking a Grossing Technician II to assist pathologists with thorough gross description and dissection of surgical specimens in a compliant lab setting. You will describe specimens across GI, Derm, Prostate, and Breast, following SOPs and CAP-defined processing standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological, chemical, or chemical laboratory science or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of grossing experience.
  • Must meet CLIA ’88 criteria to perform high complexity testing.
  • High technical knowledge in processing specimens (as defined by CAP).
  • Ability to communicate effectively via voice dictation software to create gross descriptions.
  • Requires careful adherence to defined clinical testing protocols and high attention to detail in data interpretation and troubleshooting.

  • Proficient with tissue types including GI (biopsy and polyp), Derm (shave, punch, cyst, excision), Prostate (core biopsy), and Breast (core biopsy).
  • Familiar with non-complex surgical specimens (e.g., hemorrhoid, EMB, tonsil, vas deferens, breast reductions).
  • Prioritizes and triages specimens; handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste per the laboratory’s procedures; ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Aides in discrepancy resolution.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.

Job description

Overview

The Grossing Technician II is responsible for assisting the assigned anatomic and/or clinical pathologist(s) with thorough, accurate, and organized gross description and dissection of surgical specimens. Works under supervision and follows approved standard operating procedures to accomplish assigned tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Performs accurate gross description and dissection of surgical specimens according to guidelines established by the Anatomic Pathology Medical Director.
  • Proficient with tissue types including GI (biopsy and polyp), Derm (shave, punch, cyst, excision), Prostate (core biopsy), and Breast (core biopsy).
  • Familiar with non-complex surgical specimens (e.g., hemorrhoid, EMB, tonsil, vas deferens, breast reductions).
  • Prioritizes and triages specimens; handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste per the laboratory’s procedures; ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Aides in discrepancy resolution.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.
  • Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance tests as required; maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.
  • Reports concerns of test quality and/or patient or employee safety to a Supervisor or Safety Officer.
  • Maintains working knowledge of Laboratory Information System(s) for daily task use.
  • Assists with other related duties and special projects as required; accepts other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological, chemical, or chemical laboratory science or related field required.

Additional Skills
  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical ability to distinguish fine detail.
  • Manual dexterity for laboratory equipment; ability to sit and/or stand for long periods; ability to perform repetitive motions; ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Exposure to laboratory environments with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise, fumes, and bio-hazardous materials including formalin; may handle blood-borne pathogens and live specimens.
  • Willingness to work shift work and overtime; flexibility in hours including some weekends.
