Job summary

Sagis in Houston is seeking a Histology Technician to support surgical specimen preparation and histologic processing. You will ensure accurate labeling and documentation, and work under supervision to describe gross features of specimens.

The role requires a 4 year degree with ASCP preferred, and eligibility to work in the United States. Typical schedule is full-time with potential overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related science is required.
  • ASCP certification is highly preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory.
  • Proficient with computers and familiarity with laboratory information systems.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surgical specimens for Histologic processing following SOPs.
  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of specimens.
  • Describe gross features and ensure all lesions are documented.
  • Dissect specimens and prepare tissues for histology.
  • Record measurements, weights, volumes and abnormal findings.
  • May perform basic histology tasks (embedding, microtomy, stains) if trained.
  • Maintain clean, organized work area and complete paperwork as required.
  • Interact with pathologists regarding dissection and description.
  • Escalate non-routine specimens to Pathologist Assistants as needed.
  • Adhere to safety, QA, and regulatory standards (CLIA/CAP).

  • Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 4 pm to 12:30 am
  • Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures.
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling.
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned.
  • Capable of grossing moderate to high complex/complicated specimens under direct and indirect supervision, as applicable to training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle broader range of specimens with indirect supervision (i.e., gall bladders, oriented skin lesions, etc.).
  • Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants.
  • Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable.
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
  • May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (i.e., embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains and frozen sectioning) if personnel meet all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Histotechnician SOP.
  • Complete all associated paperwork (i.e., workload recording, PM/temperature charts, etc.)
  • Follow the laboratory’s applicable procedures for job-related responsibilities.
  • Interact directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description activities, including defined specimen types that require direct supervision by a pathologist.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the histology supervisor/manager, technical supervisor, or director.
  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related science
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology is highly preferred
  • At least 1 year of Experience Required
  • Experience in a high volume clinical laboratory environment is preferred
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems are a plus
  • Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes
  • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
