Job summary

Antech Diagnostics is seeking a Grossing Laboratory Technician I to prepare, trim, and process tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. The role requires attention to detail, adherence to SOPs, and effective communication with pathologists and lab staff.

The position supports a schedule Tuesday to Saturday with a target hourly pay of 24.50. Training is included; opportunities exist for growth within a diagnostic laboratory network focused on veterinary health.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Meet minimum production standards for department
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols while ensuring quality
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code descriptions for the Pathologist
  • Communicate with Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator via email
  • Identify problems and special handling cases
  • Trim tissue for specific re-gross requests in a timely manner
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of machines and equipment
  • Follow SOPs including safety and quality procedures
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Restock supplies as needed
  • Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education

Bachelor's degree in science
Coursework in anatomy / physiology
High school diploma or equivalent

Work Shift: Tuesday to Saturday 11:30am to 8:00pm (5 Days) Training Tuesday to Saturday 5:30am to 2pm

The Target Pay for this position is $24.50 an hour. At Antech, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job‑related skills, experience, education, training and budget.

Job Purpose / Overview

The Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Responsibilities
  • Meet minimum production standards for department
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) and related protocols while ensuring the utmost quality
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken
  • Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications
  • Identify problems and special handling cases
  • Trim tissue for specific re‑gross requests when requested in a timely manner
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment
  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results
  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor
  • Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab
  • Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures
  • Maintains clean and organized work area
  • Restocks supplies as needed
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
  • Consult with senior peers on non‑complex tasks to learn through experience
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's degree in science, Biology or other Life Sciences strongly preferred
  • Coursework in anatomy / physiology required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Histology procedures and equipment
  • Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information
  • Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions
  • Positive, can‑do attitude
  • Utilize personal computer skills, including fast and accurate typing, to input data efficiently
Working Conditions
  • Stationary Position - must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours
  • Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • The ability to observe details at close range
  • Extended hours may be needed
  • Laboratory environments with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE
  • Work under close to moderate supervision
  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards
