Job summary

Antech Diagnostics is seeking a Grossing Laboratory Technician I to prepare, trim, and process tissue specimens for microscopic examination. You will produce accurate grossing notes, maintain equipment, and communicate effectively with pathologists and staff.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a Bachelor’s degree in science or life sciences preferred, and coursework in anatomy/physiology. Training and safety procedures are essential aspects of daily duties.

Responsibilities

  • Meet minimum production standards for department.
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP and related protocols.
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code descriptions for Pathologist.
  • Communicate with Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications.
  • Identify problems and special handling cases.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of machines and equipment.
  • Exercise judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
  • Follow SOPs including safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintain clean and organized work area.
  • Restock supplies as needed.
  • Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Learn through cross-training with senior peers.

Work Shift: Tuesday to Saturday 3:00am to 11:30am (5 Days) Training Tuesday to Saturday 5:30am to 2pm The Target Pay for this position is $24.50 an hour. At Antech, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.

Job Purpose/Overview

The Grossing Laboratory Technician I prepares, trims, and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) and related protocols while ensuring the utmost quality
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken
  • Communicate with and respond to Pathologists, transcription, and Lab Coordinator email communications
  • Identify problems and special handling cases
  • Trim tissue for specific re-gross requests when requested in a timely manner
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of various machines and equipment
  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results
  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor
  • Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
  • Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintains clean and organized work area.
  • Restocks supplies as needed
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required Bachelor's degree in science, Biology or other Life Sciences strongly preferred Coursework in anatomy / physiology required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments. Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures. Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Histology procedures and equipment. Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment Ability to work independently and as part of a team Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information. Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions. Positive, can-do attitude Utilize personal computer skills, including fast and accurate typing, to input data efficiently

Working Conditions

Complete how the job gets done and the way it operates Stationary Position- must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours Constantly operates a computer and other lab equipment accurately and efficiently Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch Required to lift, move, and carry up to 40 lbs. The ability to observe details at close range Extended hours may be needed Laboratory environments with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE Work under close to moderate supervision Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards.
