Description Of Work
The Plant Growth Facilities of the Agricultural Research Division provide high quality greenhouse and growth chamber spaces and professional support that meets the needs of UNL’s research, teaching, and extension programs.
As a Greenhouse Technician, you will:
- Support the daily operations of the research greenhouse by performing routine and intermediate plant maintenance and facility tasks under limited supervision.
- Water, fertilize, plant, transplant, and apply pest management treatments.
- Identify and assist in resolving plant health and growth concerns.
- Train and oversee the work of students and other staff, ensuring that day-to-day tasks are completed efficiently and in accordance with safety, research, and plant care protocols.
- Maintain records related to plant maintenance, growth conditions, and treatment applications.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in greenhouse workspaces.
- Communicate regularly with the Greenhouse Manager regarding project needs, resource planning, and workflow improvements.
Position requires the ability to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license within six months of employment. Regular weekend and holiday hours are required as part of a rotation within the staff. This is an intermediate level position ideal for individuals with some experience or education in horticulture or plant science. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.

Minimum Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent plus four years of experience in a greenhouse or related work; OR
- Associate’s degree in a plant science related field plus two years of experience in a greenhouse or related work; AND
- Intermediate plant care knowledge including the ability to recognize, evaluate, and suggest solutions to plant growth concerns.
- Effective communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driving requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field.
- Experience in plant physiology and structure of agronomic and horticultural crops grown in a greenhouse.
- Greenhouse experience with plant cultivation, including propagation, fertilization, pest and disease control, seed sowing, harvesting, storage, and sterilization techniques.
- Pesticide Applicator License preferred.
