Job summary

The University of Vermont is seeking a Grazing and Pasture Technical Assistance Provider to assist farmers in developing and improving grazing systems and pasture management. The role includes teaching grazing plans, applying conservation practices, and supporting data analysis and grant reporting.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture/environmental stewardship and 2–4 years’ experience with grazing. A Master’s degree is desirable for competitive Applicants.

  • Provide technical assistance to farmers to improve grazing systems and pasturing of livestock.
  • Teach farmers to develop grazing systems and grazing management plans.
  • Incorporate conservation strategies to improve water quality, soil health, and pasture condition.
  • Manage data and assist in analysis and grant reporting.

Posting Summary

Provide technical assistance to farmers to improve grazing systems and pasturing of livestock. Teach farmers to develop grazing systems and create grazing management plans. Work with relevant farmers to incorporate conservation strategies to improve water quality, soil health, and generally enhance the pastures for farms incorporating all species of livestock. Manage data and assist in analysis and grant reporting. Confident ability to address a range of concerns related to grazing and pasture-based agriculture.

Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to agriculture and/or environmental stewardship and 2-4 years of experience working directly with farmers on the development of grazing systems and writing grazing plans; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be skilled with a wide range of pastured livestock. Knowledge of agriculture with particular experience in grazing and pasture work.

Desirable Qualifications

Candidates with a Master’s degree in a related field and Experience with applied research and key funders and stakeholders in Vermont agriculture, particularly those engaged in grazing and pasture work ( VAAFM , NRCS , Conservation Districts, etc.) will be competitive in this search.

Anticipated Pay Range

Anticipated Pay Range $54,000 - $60,000

Other Information

Position is stationed in Middlebury but telework may be an option, in conjunction with field work.

Special Conditions

Special Conditions A probationary period may be required, Contingent on continued funding, Travel to and from worksites required, This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
