Qualifications

• Two years of full-time pro graphic design exp using Adobe CC, Word/PowerPoint, and WordPress.
• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

The Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is recruiting for Extra Help Graphic Designers I* to create and produce a high volume of diverse, visually engaging print materials. Extra Help Graphic Designers I* will develop and produce a wide variety of visual communication materials in support of Department of Behavioral Health programs, campaigns, outreach activities, presentations, trainings, and initiatives. Incumbents will create original graphic materials using approved County/Department branding and primarily computer‑based design techniques and perform related duties as required. The incumbent will work with DBH staff to clarify project objectives, audiences, content, timelines, and production needs; develops design concepts and drafts for review; incorporates approved revisions; and prepares final materials for distribution, printing, display, presentation, or digital use. Assignments may include support for general Department of Behavioral Health programs and services, the Office of Suicide Prevention (OSP), Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA), Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act, and other Department‑wide campaigns, events, and initiatives.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Consults with Department staff on graphic design projects involving brochures, flyers, posters, fact sheets, resource materials, event signage, displays, banners, social and digital graphics, presentation materials, promotional items, and other educational or outreach products; develops drafts for review and approval.
2. Creates original layouts, illustrations, icons, logos, infographics, and other graphic elements using approved Department and County branding standards.
3. Designs and prepares print and digital materials that communicate behavioral health information, resources, campaigns, and initiatives in a clear, accessible, and visually engaging manner for diverse community audiences.
4. Develops visual materials for community outreach events, trainings, presentations, workshops, pop‑up events, stakeholder meetings, and other Department activities, including exhibit and display graphics as assigned.
5. Prepares final artwork and production files for printing or digital distribution; verifies dimensions, resolution, layout, file specifications, and other production requirements; coordinates with approved printers or vendors as directed.
6. Supports the development and modification of approved web and digital layouts and prepares graphic assets for online use in coordination with appropriate Department staff.
7. Provides graphic, technical, and production support for presentations, trainings, conferences, seminars, and community events, including PowerPoint or other presentation materials, slides, visual displays, and multimedia content.
8. Organizes and maintains graphic project files, source files, templates, approved assets, photographs, and completed products for future reference and reuse; maintains basic project tracking information as assigned.

Extra‑Help positions are in the Unclassified Service which serve at the discretion of the appointing authority and do not attain regular status. These positions participate in the County's Part‑time Seasonal Temporary (PST) Deferred Compensation Plan.

The Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) is responsible for providing mental health and substance use disorder services to county residents who are experiencing major mental illness or substance abuse related issues. DBH provides mental health and substance use disorder prevention and treatment services to all age groups, with a primary emphasis on treating children/youth who may be seriously emotionally disturbed, adults who are experiencing a serious and persistent mental illness, and individuals who are experiencing substance use disorders. DBH also provides an array of outreach/engagement, prevention, and early intervention services. DBH's core values are service, integrity, accountability, and trust.

DBH is a unique County Department comprised of eight (8) direct service areas: Community Outpatient and Transitional Age Youth Services; Youth Collaborative and Justice Involved Services; Substance Use Disorder and Recovery Services; 24 Hour and Specialty Services; Adult Justice Involved and Diversion Services; Medical Services; Community Engagement and Equity Services; Office of Patients' Rights and five (5) indirect service areas: Administrative and Fiscal Services; Public Relations and Outreach Services; Program Support Services; Disaster and Safety Unit; and the Office of Compliance. The Department currently has a workforce in excess of 1500 positions and an approximate $800 million‑dollar annual budget.

Conditions of Employment

Pre‑Employment Process: Applicants must successfully pass a background check, which includes fingerprinting and medical exam.

Work Schedule: Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, forty (40) hours per week; hours may vary depending upon business needs.

Education: An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Art or Commercial Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design, -OR- 60 semester (90 quarter) units of completed coursework which must include 27 semester or 40 quarter units in Art/Commercial Art or Graphic Design. A list of completed college coursework or legible transcripts must be submitted with the application.

Experience: Two (2) years of paid full‑time equivalent professional experience in Graphic Design using the following computer programs:

• Adobe Creative Cloud applications which include Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.
• Microsoft Office (Word, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
• Web programs (WordPress).

Note: Qualifying degrees must be completed at a college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. In addition, degrees completed outside of the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service indicating equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at the college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, knowledge of PC and Mac platforms, and experience in web design, video production, and multimedia. An established portfolio is highly desirable. Additionally, demonstrated knowledge in the following areas: Layout and Pagination processes and/or Software and knowledge of ADA Title II requirements for digital collateral.
