Description

Under the general direction of the Planning Manager, the Grant Writer is responsible for researching, preparing and producing, in draft and final form, grant proposals and requests from new funding sources. The Grant Writer will work with the various program managers and governmental entities, to seek out new funding opportunities and to maintain existing grants.

The Grant Writer will meet academic and professional qualifications, demonstrate dedication to excellent employee service, and support the mission and objectives of Bay Mills Indian Community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. 1. Maintain and oversee the continued submissions for ongoing grants and contracts.
  2. 2. The Grant Writer will gather documentation and fulfill the necessary requirements of various government agencies to seek funding on behalf of the Bay Mills Indian Community;
  3. 3. The Grant Writer will maintain a calendar of grant proposals, due dates, submissions and other deadlines;
  4. 4. Persuasively communicates the organization’s mission and program goals to potential funders;
  5. 5. Maintains submission documents in the Grants drive;
  6. 6. Facilitates Executive Council approval process for Grants Department and inter-departmental grant applications and acceptance of funds;
  7. 7. The Grant Writer will interact with the Tribal Manager, Planning Manager, and Department managers to identify funding needs and potential projects.
  8. 8. Upon identifying specific projects, the Grant Writer will research available grant opportunities.
  9. 9. Similarly, he or she is responsible for obtaining relevant data needed for grant opportunities, in conjunction with department managers.
  10. 10. The Grant Writer has the responsibility to prepare, review, and submit submissions in compliance with appropriate deadlines.
  11. 11. If review is needed by accounting, legal, or others before submission, the Grant Writer is required to ensure that the process is complete and the documents are submitted on time.
  12. 12. Provide support and review for other departments writing and submitting grants.
  13. 13. The Grant Writer must keep track of all submissions and communicate with the Tribal Manager, Planning Manager, and Grants Management, any information about grant submissions. This includes, but is not limited to: approvals, denials, deadline extensions, late submissions, forgotten submissions, or any other relevant notices from Grantors.
  14. 14. Communication is vital for this position, so this individual will need to communicate well with Department managers, Grants Management, the Tribal Manager, and the Planning Manager. Formal communication documentation with funders must be filed in the Grants drive.
  15. 15. Facilitate a grant handoff meeting with Project Managers and Grants Management for awarded Grants Department grants.
  16. 16. Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position’s essential functions.
  17. 17. Must attend all mandatory trainings designated through the Human Resources Department and/or Department Director.
Requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk. The employee will be required to travel.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is full-time, 52 weeks per year. In addition to regular business hours, the person in this position must be flexible around the needs of the employer, which may include occasional evening and/or weekend hours or occasional travel for employer business. This position is not typically eligible for remote work.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  1. 1. Some formal education, or actual experience, relating to Grants or Grants Management required. Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, English, or Business Administration required. Master’s Degree in Communication, English, or Business Administration is desired;
  2. 2. Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in grant writing and fundraising with successful track record of securing significant multi‑year commitments from funding sources;
  3. 3. Research experience with search engines, such as grants.gov;
  4. 4. Superior knowledge of and proven experience writing proposals to government and private funding sources, and an understanding of the technical and financial requirements of large grants;
  5. 5. Demonstrated superior writing, research, project management and organizational skills;
  6. 6. Ability to successfully execute multiple, simultaneous projects on time with quality results;
  7. 7. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written/verbal communication skills to work effectively with people of diverse talents and backgrounds;
  8. 8. Demonstrated excellence in problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy;
  9. 9. Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, and highly-organized;
  10. 10. High level of computer literacy required; and has experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial and other pertinent data needed to submit grant proposals;
  11. 11. Must be able to travel when required.
  12. 12. Proven ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, privacy, and confidentiality.
  13. 13. Proven ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively with all employees.
  14. 14. Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  15. 15. Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans preferred.
  16. 16. To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description.
