Job summary

IHA is seeking a Nurse Extern for part-time night shifts in its Michigan facilities. The role involves assisting with patient care under supervision, responding to call lights, and collaborating with the care team to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing; must have completed two clinical semesters.
• Preferred additional nursing coursework dependent on assignment area.

Responsibilities

• Respond to patient call lights for assistance or by rounding.
• Collaborate with health care team to ensure high-quality patient care and positive staff relations.
• Observe and report patient conditions, chart and relay information to the RN; assist with emergency situations.
• Perform basic patient care under RN supervision (NG insertion, dressing changes, ECG, enteral tube maintenance, suctioning, blood glucose monitoring, phlebotomy, IV/ catheter initiation).
• Monitor patient safety and document interventions and patient responses.

• Respond to patient call lights for assistance or by rounding
• Collaborates with members of the health care team to ensure consistency and high-quality patient care and promotes productive employee relations among staff members.
• Assists the registered nurse by observing and reporting on patient conditions, recording/charting patient information and interacting with patient and family members. Reports changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition to the registered nurse. Documents interventions and patient responses accurately, completely and timely (real time as per policy). Assists nursing personnel in responding to various emergency patient situations.
• Performs a variety of basic patient care activities under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse which may include, but are not limited to:
• Nasogastric (NG) tube Insertion
• Maintenance functional activities
• Dressing changes
• ECG
• Maintenance of enteral tubes
• Suctioning
• Blood glucose monitoring
• Assisting with postmortem care
• Phlebotomy
• Initiation of peripheral IV lines and urinary catheterization
• Monitoring and managing patient safety

Nurse Extern Minimum Requirements Include

• High School diploma
• Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing. Has successfully completed two clinical semesters of nursing school.
• Preferred Additional requirements of coursework dependent on the area of assignment.

Preferred Requirements Include

• EMT, Paramedic, Nurse aide or CENA experience in a health care setting; acute care experience preferred.
• BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support.
