Job summary

Mott MacDonald in Seattle, WA is seeking a Rolling Stock Engineer with 2-5 years of rail experience to support the planning, design, procurement, testing and delivery of rail projects across North America.

You will review rolling stock designs, participate in evaluations, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and prepare technical reports. The role requires a Bachelor's in engineering and willingness to travel; hybrid in-office policy.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of experience in rolling stock, rail transit, passenger rail, transportation systems, or related engineering fields.
  • Understanding of rail vehicle systems, including propulsion, braking, HVAC, doors, communications, control systems, or vehicle mechanics.
  • Experience reviewing technical documentation, drawings, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, specification, procurement, and implementation of rolling stock systems for light rail, commuter rail, metro, and passenger rail projects.
  • Participate in vehicle evaluations, technical reviews, fleet planning studies, and engineering analyses.
  • Review rolling stock designs, drawings, technical submittals, and manufacturer documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Assist with vehicle testing, commissioning, acceptance activities, and system integration efforts.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including track, systems, operations, maintenance, and infrastructure engineers.
  • Support clients through technical assessments, design reviews, risk evaluations, and lifecycle analysis.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, presentations, and engineering documentation.
  • Participate in client meetings, workshops, and project coordination activities.

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with light rail, commuter rail, metro, or high-speed rail projects.
  • Familiarity with rail industry standards, safety requirements, and vehicle acceptance processes.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Experience working with public transit agencies, vehicle manufacturers, or rail consultants.

This position is located in Seattle, WA. You must be able to reliably commute to our office in this location, per our hybrid working policy.

The expected salary for this position is $85,000 - $94,500

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
