The Weed Science Society of America offers a graduate program focused on weed management challenges in the Midsouth, with projects spanning cotton, corn, sorghum, wheat, rice, and soybean. Research will occur near the University of Arkansas and at eastern Delta facilities, including hands-on field days and outreach. M.S.
in Weed Science or related field is required from a U.S. institution, with strong research credentials and leadership potential.
The student will join a large graduate program focused on addressing some of the most challenging weed management issues facing Midsouth growers, many of which center around herbicide-resistant weeds, including but not limited to Palmer amaranth, barnyardgrass, Italian ryegrass, and johnsongrass. The student will receive diverse exposure to crops by working in cotton, corn, grain sorghum, wheat, rice, and soybean. Some research will likely be conducted on-farm. Available projects will take a holistic approach to weed management, combining novel cultural and mechanical practices with precision-applied herbicides. During the winter months, greenhouse research will be conducted to better direct field research the subsequent summer. Several projects exist, and these can be partly tailored to the student. Research will be conducted near the University of Arkansas campus and at research facilities across the eastern Delta. The student will be given the opportunity to mentor other students, assist with teaching a weed science laboratory, oversee research at one of the offsite locations, produce fact sheets, and participate in field days, podcasts, and other outreach endeavors.
