Job summary

Arup in New York is seeking a graduate to support the design of integrated control systems within complex buildings and infrastructure. You will develop control diagrams, sequences of operation, and installation details under guidance from experienced engineers, coordinating across disciplines to ensure successful interfaces and clear responsibilities.

Responsibilities include assisting with specifications, bid evaluations, submittals, field observations, and troubleshooting during construction

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical or Process Engineering.
• Experience in CAD drafting with controls/HVAC emphasis.

Responsibilities

• Support the design of integrated control systems by developing control diagrams, points lists, network architectures, equipment schedules, instrumentation requirements, and installation details under guidance.
• Develop sequences of operation and control narratives translating system intent into clear, testable requirements for equipment staging, safeties, alarms, operating modes, and responses.
• Coordinate controls requirements across disciplines by working with MEP, technology, operations, vendors, and contractors to define interfaces and responsibilities.
• Assist with technical specifications, bid evaluations, submittal and shop-drawing reviews, contractor questions, field observations, and issue resolution.
• Support testing, commissioning, and system performance verification through factory/site acceptance tests, trend and alarm reviews, startup activities, and documentation.

Our Controls team designs the systems that allow complex buildings and infrastructure to operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. We work across the full project lifecycle, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, and operations teams to define how equipment is monitored, controlled, integrated, and tested. Our work includes building management systems, direct digital controls, programmable logic controllers, instrumentation, system integration, communication networks, and control sequences. The team supports a broad range of technically challenging projects, transforming operational requirements and engineering concepts into coordinated designs that can be implemented, commissioned, and successfully operated.

The opportunity

• Support the design of integrated control systems by developing control diagrams, points lists, network architectures, equipment schedules, instrumentation requirements, and installation details under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Develop sequences of operation and control narratives that translate mechanical and electrical system intent into clear, testable requirements for equipment staging, safeties, alarms, operating modes, and system response.
• Coordinate controls requirements across disciplines by working with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, operations, vendors, and contractors to define interfaces, resolve gaps, and establish clear control responsibilities.
• Participate throughout design and construction by assisting with technical specifications, bid evaluations, submittal and shop-drawing reviews, responses to contractor questions, field observations, and resolution of installation or integration issues.
• Support testing, commissioning, and system performance verification through the development and execution of factory and site acceptance tests, functional testing, startup activities, trend and alarm reviews, and documentation of findings and corrective actions.

Is this role right for you?

Required

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical, or Process Engineering
• Experience in CAD drafting with controls/HVAC emphasis

Preferred

• Membership in ISA, ASHRAE or ASME
• Experience in sustainability, Energy/thermal modeling, and Revit
• Pursuing EIT

• No more than 12 months of full-time experience in a comparable role

New York Hiring Range – Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $79,500 to $86,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary.
