Job summary

Arup is seeking a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in Washington, DC to design HVAC systems for sustainable buildings, collaborate across disciplines, and develop energy analyses using Revit MEP.

You will document design work, communicate technical ideas to varied audiences, and balance multiple tasks while growing with a global sustainability-focused consultancy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, or Building Sciences.
• Coursework in heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or HVAC design.
• Demonstrated leadership and time management skills.
• Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly.
• Strong teamwork and proactive learning attitude.

Responsibilities

• Design HVAC services for built environment with focus on sustainability.
• Collaborate with clients, architects, engineers and consultants on integrated solutions.
• Perform whole-building load calculations, energy analyses and façade/airflow modelling.
• Document system design in Revit MEP and communicate results.
• Prepare reports detailing calculation methods, assumptions and outcomes.
• Demonstrate prioritization and organization in a dynamic environment.
• Influence design to meet Arup sustainability commitments.

The opportunity

• Design of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) services within the built environment, with an emphasis on sustainable design
• Collaborate with clients, architects, engineers, and consultants to develop integrated solutions for complex buildings
• Perform engineering analysis and modelling, including whole building load calculations and energy analysis, façade thermal analysis, and airflow modelling
• Document system design in Revit MEP
• Communicate technical ideas to a broad range of audiences using various formats, including presentations and workshops
• Write reports documenting calculation methods and results, design assumptions, and other technical information
• The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment
• Influence with design on sustainable outcome for our clients to align with Arup sustainability commitment

Required

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, or Building Sciences related degree
• Coursework in heat transfer and thermodynamics, fluid dynamicsor HVAC design

Preferred

• Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, or Building Sciences related degree
• Passed Fundamentals of Engineering examination
• Membership in ASHRAE, USGBC, ASME
• Coursework in Energy/thermal modeling experience, Revit or 3D modeling experience and/or sustainability
• Advanced computational modeling (e.g., CFD)
• Computer programming languages (e.g., Dynamo, Python, Grasshopper)

• Candidate must be eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsored work authorization now or in the future
• No more than 12 months of full-time experience in a comparable role
• Recently graduated, or on track to graduate, from your most recent degree, related to your role of choice, before employment starts.

Washington DC Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Washington DC is $76,500 to $83,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Washington DC will differ.
