Job summary

SWOSU invites applications for a Graduate Assistant in Music for Spring 2027. The GA will provide support across designated areas within the Music Department, including band, choral, orchestral, music education, jazz studies, and music therapy, with assignments aligned to the candidate’s background.

The GA will work about 20 hours per week under the Chair of Music, gain hands-on teaching and administrative experience, and contribute to performances and classes.

Qualifications

• Admission to Music Graduate Study degree program at SWOSU.
• Willingness to commit approximately 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Provide instructional, administrative, and operational support to faculty and staff within the Music Department.
• Assist with preparation and delivery of classes, rehearsals, labs, and ensemble activities as assigned.
• Assist with undergraduate instruction, assessment, mentoring, and academic support activities as assigned.
• Support departmental performances, concerts, festivals, clinics, recruiting events, and other special programs.
• Coordinate the distribution, collection, inventory, and maintenance of music department equipment and resources.
• Represent the department professionally to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Job Summary

The Graduate Assistant will provide support across designated areas within the Music Department, which may include band, choral, orchestral, music education, jazz studies, and/or music therapy. Specific assignments will be determined based on the candidate’s background, skill set, and area of expertise to ensure alignment with departmental needs.

The Graduate Assistant is expected to carry out all duties in a manner that is professional, courteous, and efficient, fostering a welcoming and productive environment for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.

This role offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic academic setting while contributing meaningfully to the department’s mission and daily operations.

Description of Job Duties

Assignments will vary based on departmental needs and the graduate assistant's qualifications, experience, and area of study. Graduate assistants may be responsible for some, but not all, of the duties listed below:

• Provide instructional, administrative, and operational support to faculty and staff within the Music Department.
• Assist with the preparation and delivery of classes, rehearsals, labs, applied lessons, and ensemble activities as assigned.
• Assist with undergraduate instruction, assessment, mentoring, and academic support activities as assigned.
• Support departmental performances, concerts, festivals, clinics, recruiting events, and other special programs through planning, setup, execution, and strike.
• Coordinate the distribution, collection, inventory, and maintenance of music department equipment, instruments, music library materials, and classroom resources.
• Serve as a professional representative of the department by assisting students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a courteous and service-oriented manner.
• Perform graduate-level duties that may include tutoring, mentoring, instructional assistance, grading, coaching sectionals, leading rehearsals, or other responsibilities appropriate to the student's area of study and expertise.
• Complete special projects and other duties as assigned in support of departmental goals and operations.

Terms of Employment

• Employment at will
• Begin work at the start of the Spring 2027 semester
• Reports to Chair of Music Department
• Safety and job-related trainings will be completed as instructed
• Full-time music graduate assistants are provided with a set stipend of $3,300/semester and a tuition waiver for up to 18 graduate credit hours per academic year. A full-time graduate assistantship requires an average commitment of 20 hours per week, with hours varying based on workload needs.
• A Graduate Assistant should be working at a level higher than an undergraduate student employee. For example: teaching/instructing undergraduates in or out of the classroom as assigned, critiquing/grading undergraduate work/skills, etc.
