Graduate Application Review Specialist (TEMP)

Job Summary

Michigan Engineering Graduate Application Review Specialists are responsible for the review and evaluation of domestic and international graduate applications for admission in accordance with University and Michigan Engineering's guidelines, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities*

80% Review and evaluate a high volume of domestic and international applications for graduate admission using Michigan Engineering's online application evaluation process in accordance with University and Michigan Engineering guidelines, policies and procedures. Provide a comprehensive written assessment of the quality of each application in a timely fashion. The assessment will include the evaluation of subjective and objective information including a decision recommendation. This may include computational analysis of data included in the application.

Must demonstrate flexibility by keeping up-to-date with any procedural or guideline changes, which might impact review of applications. Must maintain communication and interaction with the Graduate Recruitment and Admissions Coordinator well as other staff as needed during the review process.

Ensure confidentiality and security of application files and all Michigan Engineering materials at all times.

Work independently with a high degree of confidence and integrity in an online environment.

20% Attend required virtual training and team meetings. Complete all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in engineering, human relations, or education
  • Familiarity with review and evaluation of written material
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and with a high level of integrity in a remote environment within guidelines provided by the Admissions & Recruitment team
  • Proven ability to follow both oral and written direction
  • Exceptional judgment and discretion when handling confidential information and materials
  • Experience with using Google Suite
  • Proficient and comfortable with working independently on computers and with a variety of applications
Desired Qualifications*
  • Knowledge of Michigan Engineering Admissions policies and procedures
  • Prior work experience in higher education, engineering, academic admissions, or application review
Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .

Additional Information

The Application Review Specialist position is a work-from-home, part-time (50%), temporary position. The rate of pay is $20/hr. for newly-hired Application Review Specialists.

Approximate timeline: Interviews will take place through mid-late October. All applicants will be notified of hiring decisions after all interviews have been conducted. Onboarding will take place from late October - early November. Training and application review will take place from mid-November through mid-February.

All Application Review Specialists are required to provide and maintain their own internet connection capable of meeting work requirements. Internet specifications include:

  • Computer should be connected to a cable modem or router with a wired or wireless connection.
    • High speed cable modem connectivity is desired configuration (min 3 Mbps download and 768 Kbps upload).
    • DSL is a problem and not sufficient, especially DSL to wireless.

All Application Review Specialists are required to provide and maintain their own computer capable of meeting work requirements. Minimum specifications for a personal computer include:

  • Internet Explorer 11 and earlier versions
  • Firefox 22 and earlier versions
  • Safari 6 and earlier versions
  • Minimum display resolution of 1024x768px
  • Microphone and video camera

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND RESTRICTIONS

Given the sensitive nature of the admission selection process, and in an effort to avoid any potential conflicts of interest, Graduate Application Review Specialists may not:

  • Be the parent, guardian, or family member of anyone applying to a Michigan Engineering graduate program.
  • Be employed in an admissions related role at another university nor be employed independently or with an organization that provides personal graduate admissions counseling of any type.
  • Hold another appointment at the University of Michigan that could result in extending their hours worked with the University beyond 40 hours a week, resulting in over-time compensation.

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checksare performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
