Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in site grading, excavation, or earthwork construction.
  • 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role preferred.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret civil/grading plans, topographic surveys, and blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of GPS/machine control grading systems (e.g., Trimble, Topcon) a plus.
  • Proficient in operating heavy equipment (dozers, excavators, graders, loaders).
  • Understanding of soil types, compaction methods, and erosion/sediment control practices.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
  • Basic computer/tablet skills for reporting and plan review.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret grading plans, site plans, and survey stakes to direct crew activities accurately.
  • Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the daily activities of grading crews, including equipment operators and laborers.
  • Operate heavy equipment (dozer, excavator, motor grader, skid steer, etc.) as needed to support production.
  • Monitor cut/fill quantities, elevations, and slopes to ensure work meets design tolerances.
  • Coordinate with surveyors to verify grade stakes, benchmarks, and layout accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with erosion control, stormwater, and environmental regulations (SWPPP).
  • Enforce jobsite safety protocols, conduct daily safety briefings/toolbox talks, and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment; coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance with mechanics.
  • Track daily production, material quantities, and labor hours; complete daily reports and timecards.
  • Communicate progress, delays, and issues to the Project Superintendent/Project Manager.
  • Coordinate with other trades and subcontractors (utilities, paving, concrete) to sequence work efficiently.
  • Train and mentor crew members on proper grading techniques and safety practices.
  • Ensure proper compaction, soil testing, and quality control procedures are followed.

Position Summary

The Grading Foreman leads and coordinates all field grading operations on assigned job sites, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with project plans and specifications. This role directly supervises grading crews and equipment operators, and serves as the primary point of contact between the field crew and project management on day-to-day earthwork activities.

Physical Requirements

Work Environment
  • Primarily outdoor construction jobsite environment
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather conditions
  • May require travel between multiple job sites
