Job Description
Old Sturbridge Academy is seeking a warm, skilled, and intentional Grades K–2 Teacher to join our crew in Sturbridge, MA. This role is the foundation of our students’ academic journey — responsible for building the literacy, numeracy, and habits of learning that carry students forward through their entire time at OSA and beyond.
Early elementary teaching at OSA isn’t just about covering standards. It’s about building a classroom community where young learners feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and grow. We’re looking for a teacher who brings both strong instructional craft and genuine warmth — someone who knows how to hold high expectations for young children while meeting them with care and patience.
Who We Are
Old Sturbridge Academy (OSA) is an EL Education school working in partnership with Old Sturbridge Village, providing students with rigorous, real-world learning experiences in a supportive and nurturing environment. Our students don’t just read about history and science — they live it, right on the grounds of one of the most extraordinary living history museums in the country. We are distinguished by four key elements of EL Education: a commitment to community, a commitment to high-quality work, a commitment to real-world applications, and a commitment to imagination, exploration, and immersion.
We want to be honest with prospective candidates: this is energizing, demanding work. Our school day is longer than a traditional district schedule, our expectations are high, and we ask everyone on our team to go beyond the boundaries of a job description when students need it. At OSA, we are crew, not passengers — and that applies to every member of our staff.
What You’ll Do
Instruction
- Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate daily instruction across content areas — including literacy, math, science, and social studies — grounded in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
- Deliver structured literacy instruction using evidence-based, phonics-grounded approaches consistent with the science of reading
- Build strong foundational numeracy through hands-on, conceptual Math instruction that develops number sense alongside procedural fluency
- Design learning experiences connected to OSA’s EL Education model, including age-appropriate Learning Expeditions that make content meaningful and real for young learners
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet students where they are — including small-group instruction, read-alouds, centers, and collaborative learning
- Cultivate a classroom environment built on clear routines, consistent expectations, and genuine relationships where students feel known and valued
- Differentiate instruction to support English Language Learners, students with IEPs, and students who need additional challenge
Assessment and Data
- Administer and use early literacy and numeracy assessments (e.g., running records, phonics screeners, math diagnostics) to understand where students are and plan accordingly
- Use formative assessment daily to check for understanding and adjust instruction in real time
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in compliance with school expectations
- Participate in data review cycles and student support team processes, contributing classroom data and knowledge of the whole child
- Communicate student progress clearly and specifically to families on a regular basis
Collaboration and Team Membership
- Collaborate with grade-level colleagues to plan curriculum, align expectations, and problem-solve instructional challenges together
- Partner with the special education team to coordinate supports for students with IEPs or identified learning needs
- Work closely with any instructional aides or paraprofessionals in your classroom to ensure cohesive, effective support for all students
- Contribute actively to OSA’s crew culture — participating in community-building, school-wide events, and the rhythms of school life
- Engage in professional development with a genuine growth mindset, incorporating feedback and refining your practice over time
Family and Community Engagement
- Build authentic, trusting relationships with families from the first days of school and maintain them throughout the year
- Communicate proactively and warmly with families about their child’s progress, learning goals, and how to support them at home
- Participate in family conferences, IEP meetings, and school events as needed
- Promote and support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues
- Other duties as assigned
What You Bring
- Massachusetts DESE licensure in Early Childhood Education (PreK–2) or Elementary Education (Grades 1–6), or eligibility for licensure
- Strong foundational knowledge of early literacy development, including structured literacy and phonics-based approaches
- Experience teaching in a diverse school setting, including working with English Language Learners and students with IEPs
- Track record of meaningful student growth and the ability to speak specifically to your impact on early learners
- Familiarity with EL Education, project-based learning, or other inquiry-driven instructional models preferred
- Comfort using assessment data — including early screeners and progress monitoring tools — to drive instructional decisions
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; a genuine team player who shows up for colleagues as well as students
- Warmth, patience, and the ability to build a structured, joyful classroom community for young children
- Bilingual proficiency preferred — candidates who speak Spanish, Portuguese, or another language represented in our school community are encouraged to apply
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
