Job summary

Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is seeking a part-time Elder Meal Assistant at one of our meal sites in Saint Ignace, MI. You will help prepare congregate meals for the site and for delivery, following sanitation standards and maintaining a clean kitchen and dining area.

No prior experience is required; high school diploma preferred. Serve Safe certification is preferred and a valid driver’s license is required for occasional deliveries or transportation duties.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting with the preparation of Elder congregate meals for their assigned meal site and meal delivery.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

• Help prepare meals and follow sanitation standards for food preparation and storage.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen and dining areas; washes dishes and disposes of trash appropriately.
• Meet with the cook and nutritionist as needed to coordinate meal planning.
• Shop for groceries as needed.
• Assist in maintaining inventory records for food products and supplies.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, and outside vendors/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Medium lifting of 50 pounds maximum, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience:

No experience required.

Certification/License:

Serve Safe Certification preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively. Must have strong customer services skills. Friendly, positive, and professional attitude. Must maintain confidentiality. Must be Sault Tribe Elder and reside within the seven-county service area.
