The Boston Bar Association is seeking a Government Relations Legal Intern who will support tracking legislation, preparing amicus briefs, monitoring policy developments, and drafting memos.

Responsibilities

  • Track state and federal legislative and regulatory developments related to BBA public policy priorities.
  • Monitor the schedule and status of amicus briefs, Section comments, and other public policy positions moving through the Executive Committee and Council.
  • Support preparation of amicus briefs, including research, cite-checking, and formatting, under the direction of the Director of Government Relations.
  • Draft memos, summaries, and briefing materials on pending legislation, regulations, and policy developments for the Director of Government Relations and BBA leadership.
  • Conduct research on policy issues affecting the administration of justice, the courts, and the legal profession.
  • Assist with logistics and materials for Amicus Committee and other policy-related committee meetings.
  • Support advocacy activities such as Walk to the Hill and ABA Day, as needed.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director of Government Relations, Executive Director, or COO/AED.

Job description

Hours: Part-time, non-exempt, 10-15 hours per week with flexibility to accommodate academic schedules. Eligible for remote work based on business needs.

Reports To: Director of Government Relations

Pay: $20/hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Government Relations Legal Intern supports the Director of Government Relations in tracking legislation, preparing amicus briefs, monitoring policy developments, and drafting memos on behalf of the Boston Bar Association. This role is an excellent opportunity for a law student to gain hands-on experience with legislative advocacy, public policy work, and the legal profession's role in the administration of justice.

The ideal candidate is a strong legal researcher and writer who is detail-oriented, able to manage deadlines independently, and interested in government relations and public policy.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
  • Currently enrolled in law school (1L, 2L, or 3L) or a recent JD graduate.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Interest in public policy, government relations, or legislative advocacy.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts government, politics, and the legislative process.
  • Coursework or experience in legislative drafting, appellate advocacy, or amicus practice.
