Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a hands-on Applied AI Engineer with deep cybersecurity experience to help government and national security customers apply frontier AI to critical cyber missions. You will work with cyber operators, security researchers, and engineers to design architectures using OpenAI models and secure tooling, delivering prototypes into secure operations.

This role requires frequent on-site work in the DMV area, an active TS/SCI clearance, and hands-on experience across red teaming,

Qualifications

• Active TS/SCI clearance with full-scope polygraph.
• 7+ years hands-on cybersecurity or security-focused software engineering.
• Experience with government or national security missions preferred.
• Proficient in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Go.
• Ability to design secure architectures and implement AI-powered tools.

Responsibilities

• Work on-site with government clients in the DMV area.
• Own hands-on implementation for government cyber use cases.
• Lead technical discovery for high-value AI applications across domains.
• Build secure cyber prototypes and agentic workflows using OpenAI models.
• Design and run evaluations measuring correctness, security impact, reliability, and operator effectiveness.
• Collaborate with government security leaders and OpenAI teams to define success criteria.
• Contribute reusable code and guidance to open-source resources.
• Scale the Applied AI Engineering function by sharing knowledge and patterns.
• Translate deployments and results into actionable product feedback.
