Overview

The Government Affairs (GA) Manager will be responsible for the daily management of the US government relations and related stakeholder engagement function for WuXi AppTec under the leadership of the US President and COO. WuXi AppTec has laid a strong foundation for proactive engagement with government stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels. This position will help to implement and build on our existing GA activities. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a capacity for both creativity and strategic planning.

This job description is intended to be general and may be revised from time to time. At management’s discretion, the employee may be assigned different or additional duties from time to time.

This job can be remote, but we prefer the candidate to be in the Washington, D.C. area.

Responsibilities
  • Support the US President and COO and coordinate with external government relations (GR) counsel, communications advisors, and others to contribute to and implement a GR strategy that raises awareness of Wuxi AppTec and its US operations among policymakers and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain a database of public officials and their staff, as well as external partners and coalitions of organizations whose mission and US policy agenda is aligned with WuXi AppTec’s GR activities.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with relevant government staff at the federal level helping to communicate company developments, coordinating meetings, site visits and events; and serving as a primary point of contact as appropriate. Some work expected at the state or local level in the four US states we operate in (CA, DE, MA, and NJ).
  • Monitor and report on policy issues that impact WuXi AppTec’s operations in the United States, including legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Create and review briefing materials (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) for internal and external audiences as necessary.
  • Represent the company and build and maintain relationships with trade organizations and relevant state chapters.
  • Form effective, internal partnerships with site and Business Unit (BU), WuXi AppTec’s Legal department, and Communications team.
  • Develop engagement strategies, drive processes and control and utilize data/metrics to advance and demonstrate progress associated with GR functions.
  • Assist with administrative duties as needed, including scheduling and conducting meeting follow-up on behalf of the US President and COO.
Qualifications

Experience / Education Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences company. Experience establishing or implementing a GR strategy at another organization is highly desirable.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in a science discipline (BA or BS) strongly preferred. Able to understand and explain scientific principles to non-scientist as needed.
  • Experience within a global, multi-cultural organization is a strong plus.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Fluent in English.
  • Superior relationship-building and networking skills. Able to navigate complex and matrixed organizations and contribute as both a strategic counsellor and strong individual contributor.
  • Highly proficient in oral & written communication skills: a good storyteller with the ability to simplify complex science or business issues in writing or in verbal exchanges.
  • Proficient in Microsoft (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat).
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills; excellent attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and interact confidently with senior leaders within the organization.
  • Able to quickly learn new information and conduct risk/benefit analysis; strong analytical skills; demonstrated business acumen.
  • High degree of personal discretion and confidentiality.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work remotely, travel onsite or to 3rd party locations (<20%) as required.
  • Able to participate in occasional calls outside of regular hours (10%).
