Job summary

Northeastern University’s Global Learner Support seeks a part-time tutor to help international and domestic students enhance academic English skills. You will provide 50-minute, one-on-one tutoring focusing on writing, speaking, and reading to support student success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, or related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • TESOL/TEFL, ESL, or equivalent language-teaching qualification preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching English as an additional/second language, tutoring, or providing academic language support to university-level or adult learners.
  • Note: This is a part-time position requiring 5–10 hours of on-ground tutoring per week.

Responsibilities

  • Support students in developing academic and professional writing skills by introducing and reinforcing writing conventions and expectations.
  • Provide individualized feedback and guidance on organization, clarity, coherence, grammar, vocabulary, and style.
  • Familiarize students with APA and MLA citation conventions and provide practice materials.
  • Develop students’ oral communication through structured conversation, pronunciation, and fluency practice.
  • Assist students with reading, vocabulary strategies, and test preparation for English proficiency exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, CELPIP.

About the Opportunity Job Summary Global Learner Support (GLS) at Northeastern University supports international and domestic learners through individualized English language instruction and academic communication support. Tutors provide 50-minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions designed to help students develop the language and communication skills needed for academic and professional success. Tutorials may address academic and professional writing, listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary development, academic presentation skills, pronunciation, fluency, and APA/MLA citation practices , as well as occasional preparation for standardized English language proficiency exams such as IELTS, TOEFL-iBT, and CELPIP . Qualified tutors should be comfortable supporting a broad range of language and communication needs, while recognizing that individual tutors may have particular areas of specialization. Tutors are expected to create a welcoming, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment; assess students’ individual needs; provide targeted instruction and strategies; and empower learners to become more confident and independent communicators. Job Responsibilities Supporting the mission and values of Global Learner Support Support students in developing academic and professional writing skills by: Introducing and reinforcing academic writing conventions and expectations Providing individualized feedback and guidance on organization, clarity, coherence, grammar, vocabulary, and style Sharing relevant writing resources, models, and strategies that promote independent learning Supporting students in understanding and applying APA and MLA citation conventions Identifying recurring language or writing challenges and providing targeted instruction Develop students’ oral communication skills by: Facilitating structured conversation and speaking practice based on students’ goals and needs Supporting students with pronunciation, intonation, word and sentence stress, fluency, and intelligibility Providing constructive feedback and strategies to build confidence and effectiveness in academic and professional communication Identifying students who may benefit from more specialized oral language instruction or additional support Support students in developing reading and vocabulary skills by: Sharing effective reading strategies and approaches for academic and professional texts Helping students develop vocabulary-building strategies and increase comprehension Adapting materials and activities to students’ proficiency levels, disciplines, and goals Provide standardized English language proficiency test preparation by: Supporting students preparing for exams such as TOEFL-iBT, IELTS, and CELPIP Familiarizing students with relevant test formats, question types, and assessment criteria Providing strategies and targeted practice to strengthen students’ language skills and test readiness Prepare effectively for individual tutorials by: Reviewing students’ identified goals, needs, and previous tutorial notes when available Selecting or developing appropriate instructional materials, activities, and strategies Adapting instructional approaches based on students’ proficiency levels, learning styles, and academic or professional contexts Deliver high-quality, student-centered tutorials by: Creating a supportive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment Tailoring instruction and feedback to individual student needs and goals Encouraging
