Job summary

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a seasoned design and engineering professional to join the Inside Plant Design and Engineering Team. You will collaborate with engineers and managers across the company to develop capacity management solutions for the physical layer in data centers and edge sites.

Responsibilities include delivering scalable fiber optic and copper plant designs, automating routing of the physical layer, coordinating turn‑ups, and traveling to AWS data centers.

Qualifications

  • Experience translating design concepts into deployable data-center plans.
  • 5+ years of construction or project management experience.
  • Experience defining data center system‑level architecture and documenting requirements.
  • 2+ years IT experience or cabling infrastructure principles.

Responsibilities

Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a highly innovative company that collaborates across disciplines to produce technology that changes our world. The AWS Inside Plant Design and Engineering Team is a new fast-growing and leading-edge research and development team that is rethinking the design for the critical arteries that connect the various pieces of hardware inside AWS’ data centers and edge sites.

As a member of this team, you will work directly with engineers and managers across the company to develop capacity management solutions for the physical layer. You will also work with industry suppliers and startups to develop requirements and recommend new technology.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure timely delivery of scalable fiber optic & copper plant designs
  • Develop an automated solution for how we route and utilize our physical layer
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deliver designs that meet capacity and network requirements and turn‑up timelines
  • Identify and respond to risks and high‑priority issues rapidly and effectively
  • Support New Product Introduction activities that improve infrastructure quality, reduce cost and installation time
  • Travel 20+% to review projects and coordinate with onsite personnel and contractors at AWS' Data Centers
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience carrying new design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience in MS Excel, Word, and Windows Operating Systems
  • 5+ years of construction or project management experience
  • Experience defining data center system‑level architecture, documenting performance and equipment requirements, creating and communicating conceptual designs, and creating and maintaining project documentation
  • 2+ years of IT experience, or experience with cabling infrastructure best practices and methodologies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of critical data center equipment
  • Knowledge of engineering documentation, electrical diagrams and standard operating procedures
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, or OSHA
  • Experience in project management in data centers or comparable critical infrastructure
  • Experience in Data Center Engineering Operations, with a deep understanding of electrical and mechanical data center infrastructure
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction specifications and drawings for all domains

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage), 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
