Job summary

Jefferson County Personnel Board is hiring a GIS Technician (I) for the Tax Assessor (Birmingham) department. The role focuses on creating, verifying, and editing GIS databases for tax mapping and legal descriptions, with occasional field verification visits.

The technician will enter records, assist the public with questions, and work under supervision to ensure accuracy and policy adherence. The position involves indoor work with potential travel for mapping validation.

Qualifications

Experience with basic map reading and interpretation (Google Earth, maps, legends)
Basic data entry and computer skills
Completion of GIS coursework (Drafting/Design, Cartography, CAD, Geography, GIS)
Associate degree or higher in GIS/Geography/Geospatial Mapping or certification from a recognized source
Experience entering/updating mapping data (CAMA, SQL)
Experience researching property or mapping information using maps/deeds

Responsibilities

Create GIS maps by translating data from deeds, blueprints, and maps using GIS software or hand-drawing.
Maintain GIS database content and verify submissions for accuracy.
Research GIS information by reviewing deeds, ownership proofs, and site visits as needed.
Prepare correspondence and handle requests for mapping services and information.
Create reports by verifying GIS data and documenting outcomes.
Designate voting districts in the County voter database to support elections.
Perform routine GIS hardware/software maintenance and updates.
Engage in professional development and keep up with GIS policies and practices.
