Job summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and complex tasks of a technical nature in the coordination of a County-wide geographic information system. Prepares, revises and updates maps; reviews property deeds and other records; assist other department in conveyance of title; and performs other work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician uses skilled conventional and computerized drafting techniques to prepare and maintain maps and other records for the County. The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below. Marginal duties (shown in italics) are those which are least likely to be essential functions for any single position in this class.

1. Using the GIS System, prepares, revises, or updates maps, overlays, and other visual records using conventional and computerized drafting techniques and existing maps, surveys, or legal descriptions of property or boundaries.
2. Maintains Assessor Plats and Mining Plats, and conducts quality control checks to insure integrity of the data and performs necessary corrections.
3. Plots and records boundaries, easements, and other information from descriptions in deeds, property descriptions and other sources of information.
4. Creates, maintains, acquires and distributes GIS data for use with street centerlines, water bodies and features, easements, zoning, aerial photography, soil surveys and digital elevation models.
5. Serves as the County liaison and technical resource on questions, issues and projects involving GIS applications.
6. Computes scales required to increase or decrease sizes of revised maps; computes land areas.
7. Assigns Assessor's parcel numbers and maintains appropriate records.
8. Assists public, title companies, brokers, appraisers and others with land descriptions; reviews planning and zoning maps for accuracy and completeness.
9. Advices superiors of mapping problems, apparent defects in chain of title, boundary descriptions, or other source material.
10. Reproduces maps and other documents.

Knowledge of

principles, practices, and equipment used in methods of computer-aided drafting and GIS applications; drafting maps; legal descriptions of property; mathematics including algebra and geometry; basic office procedures.

Ability to

use mechanical and computerized drawing tools and to do drafting and lettering; plot boundaries, easements, and other visual records using conventional and computerized drafting techniques and existing maps, surveys, or legal descriptions of property our boundaries; read and use assessment records, deeds, and other public and private records used in property transactions; assist the public and others in the use of maps and other legal descriptions.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

Associate of Arts Degree in Geography, GIS, Computer Science or closely related field or a combination of experience and education equal to one year in geography, GIS systems, computer aided drafting or equivalent training.
