Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist with creating, updating, and maintaining GIS maps, layers, databases, and related records.
• Collect, verify, and enter geographic and attribute data using GIS software, GPS, and mobile GIS apps.
• Update GIS datasets related to utilities, zoning, infrastructure, streets, drainage, and municipal assets.
• Review GIS data for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance with City standards.
• Create maps, exhibits, and visualizations to support City projects and planning.
• Assist with basic spatial analysis, data queries, measurements, and field verification under staff guidance.
• Transform and organize information from plans, spreadsheets, and field observations into GIS.
• Maintain organized GIS files, documentation, and metadata.
• Provide basic technical support to City staff using GIS applications and troubleshoot issues under staff guidance.
• Collaborate on GIS-related projects such as asset inventory, land use planning, and infrastructure mapping.
• Research GIS best practices and emerging technologies and share findings with GIS staff.
• Protect confidential information and follow cybersecurity requirements.
• Communicate project status and data questions to relevant staff.
• Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.

Functions:

This job requires in-person work. Remote work not available for this position.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Assists with creating, updating, and maintaining GIS maps, layers, databases, and related records.
• Collects, verifies, and enters geographic and attribute data using GIS software, GPS technology, mobile GIS applications, and other data collection tools.
• Updates and maintains GIS datasets related to utilities, zoning, infrastructure, streets, drainage, facilities, addressing, development, and other municipal assets.
• Reviews GIS data for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance with City standards.
• Creates maps, exhibits, visualizations, and other GIS products to support City projects, planning, infrastructure development, environmental assessments, and departmental requests.
• Assists with basic spatial analysis, data queries, measurements, research, and field verification under staff guidance.
• Transforms, organizes, and integrates information from plans, spreadsheets, databases, drawings, field observations, and other sources into GIS.
• Assists with maintaining organized GIS files, documentation, metadata, and project records.
• Provides basic technical support to City staff using GIS applications and assists with troubleshooting GIS software or hardware issues under staff guidance.
• Collaborates on GIS-related projects such as asset inventory, land use planning, infrastructure mapping, and other special projects.
• Researches GIS best practices and emerging technologies and shares relevant findings with GIS staff.
• Protects confidential, sensitive, and restricted City information and follows applicable cybersecurity and data-security requirements.
• Communicates project status, questions, discrepancies, and potential data issues to appropriate staff.
• Performs related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Training, Education and Experience Required:

• Current enrollment in, or recent completion of coursework toward, a degree, certificate, or other educational program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geospatial Science, Urban or Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Coursework or other introductory experience involving GIS, mapping, geographic data, or related technology.
• Basic computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software applications.

Preferred Training, Education and Experience:

• Coursework or experience using Esri ArcGIS products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or related applications.
• Experience with GPS, mobile GIS applications, field data collection, spatial analysis, databases, or cartographic principles.
• Previous academic, volunteer, project, or work experience involving GIS or geographic data.
• Equivalent combinations of relevant education, training, and experience that demonstrate the knowledge and ability to perform the work may be considered.

Requirements- Certificates and Licenses:

• Valid Texas driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within a timeframe established by the City) and reliable transportation, if driving is required for assigned duties.
• Ability to work outdoors for field data collection in various weather and site conditions.

Work Environment:

• Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoor field settings.
• Office work involves regular use of computers, GIS software, and standard office equipment.
• Field assignments may involve exposure to heat, cold, rain, sun, dust, insects, uneven terrain, vegetation, traffic, construction areas, and active municipal infrastructure.
• May work near streets, utilities, drainage facilities, construction sites, or other operational areas while following applicable safety procedures.
• Schedule is part-time and may provide flexibility around academic commitments, subject to departmental staffing and operational needs.
• Work hours and assignments may vary depending on projects, field conditions, and departmental needs.

Internship Status:

This position is intended to provide practical, professional experience and continued development in Geographic Information Systems and municipal operations. The duration of the internship will be based on departmental needs, available funding, work availability, and the intern’s continued educational and professional development. Continuation of the internship does not guarantee future regular employment with the City.
