Job summary

Baxter & Woodman is offering a GIS Intern position in Crystal Lake, IL or Milwaukee, WI. The role provides hands-on experience in municipal GIS projects, with exposure to field data collection and ArcGIS workflows.

Qualifications

• Ongoing pursuit of a four-year degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Urban Planning or related field.
• Basic understanding of GIS concepts and interest in developing practical GIS skills.
• Willingness to perform field data collection and office GIS tasks.
• Strong problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform GIS mapping, data development, editing, analysis and QC using Esri ArcGIS software.
• Assist with development and maintenance of maps, GIS databases and geospatial information.
• Configure and support ArcGIS Online web maps, apps, dashboards and mobile GIS solutions.
• Support municipal GIS projects across utilities, infrastructure, public works and planning.
• Perform GPS/GNSS field data collection and verify assets and as-built information.

About The Role, Your Impact

Baxter & Woodman’s Spatial Technology Group has a rewarding opportunity for a GIS Intern. The position will be based out of our Crystal Lake, IL or Milwaukee, WI office and will provide hands‑on experience supporting a variety of municipal GIS projects.

This internship will provide exposure to both office‑based GIS work and field data collection, with opportunities to work alongside experienced GIS professionals and directly support municipal clients. Successful candidates will possess a strong work ethic, technical problem‑solving skills, an interest in GIS technology, and a willingness to learn. The ideal candidate will value teamwork, take pride in producing high‑quality work, and be comfortable working on a variety of projects and assignments.

What your day‑to‑day will look like, and what you will learn on the job:

• Report to the GIS Department Manager for work responsibilities, scheduling, and assignments.
• Perform GIS mapping, data development, editing, analysis, and quality‑control tasks using Esri ArcGIS software.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of maps, GIS databases, and other geospatial information.
• Assist with the configuration and support of ArcGIS Online web maps, applications, dashboards, and mobile GIS solutions.
• Support municipal GIS projects involving utilities, infrastructure, public works, planning, and other local government operations.
• Perform GPS/GNSS field data collection and verification of utility assets, pavement, signage, ADA infrastructure, as‑built information, and other municipal assets.
• Review and incorporate field‑collected information, record drawings, as‑built plans, and other source information into GIS.
• Assist GIS staff with special projects, data analysis, troubleshooting, and development of new GIS solutions.

Education Requirement

• Ongoing pursuit of a four‑year degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field.

Must‑haves, What You Will Bring

• Basic understanding of GIS concepts and an interest in developing practical GIS skills.
• Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Pro.
• Ability and willingness to perform both office‑based GIS assignments and outdoor field data collection.
• Strong technical problem‑solving skills and willingness to learn new GIS technologies, applications, and workflows.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as needed for field equipment and project activities.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to travel throughout the Chicagoland or southeast Wisconsin area and to municipal client locations as needed.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications

• AutoCAD experience

Compensation

The pay for this role is $23.00 an hour. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, and certifications.
