Job summary

The Texas Department of Transportation Fort Worth District is seeking a Geographic Information Specialist I to develop GIS data, maps, and analyses for transportation projects. You will collect GPS data, digitize spatial layers, and support data-driven decisions across the agency.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor's in Geography or GIS and are proficient with ESRI ArcGIS; CAD experience is a plus. This full-time role is based in Fort Worth with opportunities for professional growth.

Job description

Performs geographic information systems (GIS) data development, integration and analysis, produces maps and graphics, and extracts, analyzes and reports data. Provides technical assistance and support of transportation related activities or projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties

• Collects global positioning system (GPS) data and converts GPS data into GIS datasets.
• Collects, prepares, digitizes and codes spatial data into GIS format.
• Creates, maintains and updates GIS databases and cartographic products using the ESRI suite of ArcGIS software.
• Develops and maintains links between attributes and other databases.
• Uses linear referencing to update and maintain the roadway network and attributes.
• Digitizes and maintains roadway line work and attributes, base map layers, and administrative polygon boundaries.
• Geo references scanned paper maps for feature extraction.
• Converts CAD and other map formats into ArcG.
• Generates reports and produces graphic products.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems or related field. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Conditions of Employment

• Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
• Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions.

In this position, you’ll work on a wide range of projects, including map-making, data maintenance and management, and application development, to solve problems and deliver projects. Share your GIS knowledge, skills, and resources by supporting and training other users throughout the District. Ideal candidates should be detail oriented, resourceful, and innovative with the ability to manage and deliver multiple projects on schedule.
