Overview

ConVal Regional High School is searching for the next head coach to lead our girls' basketball program. Candidates should have coaching experience, or advanced playing experience, and a dedication to developing people of character in line with the school's mission and vision. The next coach will be dedicated to helping each student‑athlete reach their potential as a player, student, and citizen, while instilling the concepts of community, adaptability, respect, engagement, and safety.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success.
• Serve as an appropriate role model through actions, words, and interactions with players, coaches, officials, opponents, families, media members, and others.
• Ensure student safety, practice and game planning, equipment and uniform management, and oversee assistant and JV coaches in partnership with the director of athletics.

Staff Responsibilities

• Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for staff.
• Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
• Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance per local policy.
• Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant coaches at season’s end.
• Maintain discipline, address grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

• Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events.
• Prepare and coordinate sport events or practices, adhering to facility times and coordinating with maintenance and school employees.
• Provide documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
• Safeguard and protect equipment, maintaining proper storage and reconditioning, and submit annual inventory records.
• Recommend policy, method, or procedural changes to the athletic director.

Student Responsibilities

• Serve as a mentor to promote trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
• Monitor each athlete’s grades and conduct.
• Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during all practices, games, and travels.
• Distribute training rules and regulations of the sport to all participants.
• Implement programs and protocols concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
• Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries, submitting to the athletic office within 24 hours.
• Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
• Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.

Finance & Equipment

• Collaborate with the athletic director to establish budgeting requirements for the next season.
• Recommend equipment guidelines on type, style, color, or technical specifications.
• Operate within budget appropriations and recover costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
• Arrange issuance, storage, and reconditioning of equipment, submitting annual inventory; properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
• Monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing who may enter, issue, or requisition equipment.
• Ensure athletes stay in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
• Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games, maintaining general cleanliness of facilities and specific sport equipment.
• Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
• Instill respect for equipment and school property in each player.

Public Relations

• Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
• Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes, and externally through news media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
• Ensure the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
• Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
• Present information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.

Qualifications

• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
• Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sport).
• Substantial knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and ongoing study of new theories and procedures.
• Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.

Reports To

The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.

Supervises

Advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. Simultaneously, the coach must instruct and demonstrate socially acceptable character development, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride in accomplishment. To upgrade their knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

General Guidelines

• Success of athletic programs strongly influences community image; public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community/parent pressure for winning must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health.
• The job description provides sufficient guidance; in cases not specifically covered, a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
