Job Description Summary
The Endoscopy Technician reports to the Nurse Manager and is responsible for assisting surgeons, gastroenterologists, physicians and other medical staff in preparation and performance of surgical/endoscopy procedures by processing and furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment and services for the care and treatment of patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical support and assistance during GI procedures, including endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
- Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.
- Ensure availability, functionality, and cleanliness of GI equipment and instrumentation; perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses and team members to coordinate patient care before, during and after GI procedures; assist in patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery.
- Accurately document procedural details, patient information and equipment usage in electronic medical records and maintain thorough, organized records for quality assurance and compliance.
- Adhere to protocols, policies, and procedures related to GI procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance; participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits and inspections.
- Stay informed about advancements in GI technology and procedures; provide training and mentorship on equipment use and safety protocols.
Minimum Training and Education
- High‑school diploma or equivalency with at least one year of patient‑care experience in a health‑care facility; or Certified Nursing Assistant; or successful completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course; or EMT or Paramedic certification; or Bachelor’s degree.
- Successful completion of SGNA modules for GI Technical Specialist within a specified time frame desired.
- Ability to understand and implement detailed instructions in therapeutic procedures and make accurate physical observations of patients.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
- Basic Life Support required upon hire.
- Maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking and climbing stairs.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes, from elevated areas, in confined/cramped spaces, from kneeling positions, bending, twisting, squatting, pinching, gross motor activities with fingers and hands, reaching overhead, repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, using both legs and lower extremities for balance and coordination.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted; lift objects up to 50 lbs. from floor or 36 inches; lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.; exert up to 50 lbs. of force.
- Maintain vision, hearing acuity (corrected) and ability to handle stressful situations; rotate shifts, work overtime, work in a latex‑safe environment.
Additional Requirements
- Minimum one year work experience in a 0.6 FTE GI Technical Specialist I position at MUSC CHS or one year of patient‑care work in a health‑care facility; or college degree; or active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals; or active enrollment in a healthcare‑related field; or Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant or equivalent training.
- Basic Life Support required within two weeks of hire; thereafter must maintain current AHA BLS or American Red Cross BLS certification.
