Job summary

The Endoscopy Technician at MUSC assists surgeons and GI physicians during endoscopy procedures by preparing and furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment and services for patient care.

You will help position patients, operate GI equipment, monitor vitals, document in EMR, and participate in infection control and quality assurance to ensure safe care.

Minimum training includes a high school diploma or equivalent with patient care experience; BLS certification is required.

Job Summary/Purpose:

The Endoscopy Technician reports to the Nurse Manager and is responsible for assisting surgeons/gastroenterologists/physicians and other medical staff in preparation and performance of surgical/endoscopy procedures by processing and furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment and services for the care and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities

Procedural Assistance: Provide technical support and assistance during GI procedures, including but not limited to endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.

Equipment Management: Ensure the availability, functionality, and cleanliness of GI equipment and instrumentation. Perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed to maintain optimal performance and safety standards.

Patient Care Coordination: Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care before, during, and after GI procedures. Assist in patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery, ensuring patient comfort, safety, and confidentiality at all times.

Documentation and Record-keeping: Accurately document procedural details, patient information, and equipment usage in electronic medical records (EMR) systems or other designated documentation platforms. Maintain thorough and organized records of procedures, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels to support quality assurance and compliance efforts.

Quality Assurance and Compliance: Adhere to established protocols, policies, and procedures related to GI procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control audits, and regulatory inspections to ensure adherence to standards of care and best practices.

Education and Training: Stay informed about advancements in GI technology, procedures, and equipment through ongoing education and professional development activities. Provide training and mentorship to new staff members, residents, and fellows on GI procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.

Minimum Training and Education:

At least a high school diploma or equivalency with at least one year of patient care experience in a health care facility; or a Certified Nursing Assistant; or successful completion of a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant course at an accredited institution or equivalent training; or EMT or Paramedic certification; or a Bachelor's degree. Successful completion of the SGNA modules for GI Technical Specialist within a specified time frame desired. Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and ability to make accurate physical observation of patients. Applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills required.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:

Basic Life Support required upon hire. Thereafter, must maintain a Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements: At least 1 year work experience in a .6fte GI Technical Specialist I position at MUSC CHS or 1 year of patient care work experience in a health care facility; or a college degree, or active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution; or active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution; or a Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant, or equivalent training. Credentials: Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
