Company Description Consultants in Gastroenterology is a specialized medical practice focused on providing comprehensive digestive health care. The team of skilled and experienced gastroenterologists performs cancer screenings, colonoscopies, upper endoscopies (including EGD and ERCPs), and endoscopic ultrasounds (EUS). Role Description The GI certified medical coder is responsible for accurately coding gastroenterology procedures and services, including screenings, colonoscopies, endoscopies, and related diagnostic tests. This full-time hybrid role is based in Columbia, SC, with the opportunity to perform some coding and documentation tasks from home. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing clinical documentation, assigning appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes, ensuring compliance with payer and regulatory guidelines, and working closely with physicians and billing staff to clarify documentation and resolve coding issues. The role also involves assisting with claim audits, reducing denials, supporting revenue cycle optimization, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of gastroenterology coding rules and industry changes. The coder is expected to follow practice policies, protect patient confidentiality, and contribute to efficient and accurate billing processes.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in GI-specific medical coding, including CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes for colonoscopies, endoscopies, ERCPs, EUS, and related procedures.
  • Strong understanding of payer rules, compliance requirements, and documentation standards for gastroenterology services.
  • Ability to read and interpret clinical notes, operative reports, and diagnostic findings to assign accurate codes.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with physicians, clinical staff, and billing teams.
  • High attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage workloads in a hybrid on-site/remote environment.
  • Certification as a professional coder (e.g., CPC, CCS, or equivalent) required; GI or specialty coding experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in outpatient specialty practice or hospital-based GI coding is beneficial.
  • Comfort with electronic health record (EHR) systems, practice management platforms, and basic office software.
  • Commitment to patient privacy, ethical standards, and continuous professional development in medical coding.
