Job summary

Hilo Benioff Medical Center seeks a GI Assistant to support the Endoscopy team, assisting nurses and physicians with patient care before, during, and after GI procedures. You will help with prep, vitals, and room turnover in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required/preferred.
• BLS certification required within 6 months of employment.
• 1 year of experience in a health facility involving observation and reporting of patient conditions.

Responsibilities

• Receive and prepare patients for endoscopy procedures; assist with changing, bowel prep, NPO status, vital signs, and documentation in EMR.
• Safely transport patients and assist with positioning and procedural activities.
• Assist physicians during procedures by anticipating instrument, equipment, and supply needs; support room setup and turnover.
• Process and disinfect GI endoscopes per infection-control policies; maintain a clean and organized environment.
• Monitor post-procedure vitals, document changes, and safely transport patients to their attendant.
• Restock and coordinate with Central Supply; report equipment/supply issues to supervisor.

The GI Assistant supports the Endoscopy team by assisting Registered Professional Nurses and physicians with patient care and procedural activities before, during, and after gastrointestinal procedures. This role helps ensure safe, efficient patient care through preparation, vital-sign monitoring, equipment and supply support, endoscope processing, room turnover, and adherence to infection-control standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Receive and prepare patients for endoscopy procedures, including assisting with changing, confirming bowel preparation and NPO status, obtaining vital signs, and documenting information in the electronic medical record.
• Safely transport patients to and from the Endoscopy Unit and assist with patient positioning and procedural activities
• Assist physicians during endoscopic procedures by anticipating instrument, equipment, and supply needs and supporting procedure-room setup and turnover.
• Process and disinfect gastrointestinal endoscopes in strict accordance with established infection-control policies and procedures; maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.
• Monitor and document post-procedure vital signs, promptly communicate changes in patient condition, discontinue IVs as directed, and safely transport patients to their responsible attendant.
• Maintain adequate supplies and equipment by restocking the Endoscopy Unit, coordinating with Central Supply, assisting with inventory, and reporting equipment or supply issues to the supervisor or Endoscopy Registered Professional Nurse.

Education, Certification, & Experience

Entry Level:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• One year of experience in a health facility such as a hospital, clinic, health center, or other medically oriented institution involving observation and reporting of patient conditions and/or treatment procedures.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers required within 6 months of employment.

Full Performance Level:

• In addition to the entry-level requirements, one year of experience working in an endoscopy unit performing pre-procedural, intra-procedural, and post-procedural activities.

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
