Main Purpose of Job

Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, this position provides routine daily nursing care to residents and patients; ensures a safe and comfortable environment; and assists all residents and patients to their optimal level of health and functioning. Provides feedback to the nurse regarding the nurse-directed plan of care. Advocates for the resident/patient by notifying the nurse of any requests for information, concerns about care, and any resident/patient needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant in any healthcare setting.

Notes:

  • Candidates may substitute experience in direct patient care for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Hospital Corpsman classifications or Health Care Specialists and Medical Services specialty codes in the nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

  • Candidates must possess and maintain a current Geriatric Nursing Assistant certification from the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • Employees may be required to complete and maintain current CPR certification.

Special Requirements

  • Completion of an in-service training program approved by the hiring facility within the first three months of employment.
  • Maintain a current listing in the Geriatric Nursing Assistant registry of the Maryland State Board of Nursing.
  • May be subject to 24-hour call and must provide a reachable phone number.
  • Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Maryland regulations.

Candidates may remain on the eligible list for at least one year and may be considered for similar positions.
