Job summary

Certerra is seeking a motivated Geotechnical Project Engineer to join our Reno, NV team. In this role you will support geotechnical investigations, field testing, data analysis, and report preparation across civil, infrastructure, and land development projects.

Under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers, you will gain hands-on experience across all phases of geotechnical engineering practice, with opportunities for professional licensure and career growth.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Civil Engineering (geotechnical focus) required.
• 1–3 years geotechnical experience required.
• MS in Geotechnical Engineering preferred; PE license in NV or ability within 6 months.
• OSHA 30 / NAQTC Materials Testing preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee geotechnical borings, test pits, and CPT investigations.
• Log soil and rock samples using USCS and ASTM methods.
• Coordinate safely with drill crews on site.
• Perform field testing and data collection for reports.
• Prepare full geotechnical investigation and construction observation summaries.

Salary Range: $70,000.00 To $95,000.00 Annually

Certerra is seeking a motivated Geotechnical Project Engineer to join our team in Reno, NV. In this role you will support geotechnical investigations, field testing, data analysis, and report preparation on a wide variety of civil, infrastructure, and land development projects. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers, you will gain hands‑on experience across all phases of geotechnical engineering practice. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career engineer seeking to build a strong foundation in applied geotechnical engineering within a collaborative, growth‑oriented firm.

Duties:

• Field Investigation & Sampling: Oversee, conduct and observe geotechnical borings, test pits, and CPT investigations;
• Log soil and rock samples using USCS and ASTM methods;
• Coordinate safely with drill crews on site.

Laboratory Testing & Data Analysis:

• Oversee and/or Perform Atterberg limits,
• Sieve analysis, compaction, consolidation, and permeability testing; compile, QC, and interpret field and laboratory data;
• Develop subsurface profiles and cross- sections.

Engineering Analysis & Design Support:

• Develop bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, and liquefaction analyses; support foundation and pavement design using software such as gINT, SLOPE/W, and SETTLE3.

Geotechnical Report Preparation:

• Draft boring logs, figures, cross-sections, and tables;
• prepare full geotechnical investigation reports, compaction reports, and construction observation summaries under direction of senior staff.

Construction Observation & Testing:

• Perform field observation and materials testing during earthwork and foundation activities;
• Monitor compaction and field acceptance criteria; prepare daily field reports and document contractor compliance.

Education/Qualifications:

• Required: B.S. in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering (geotechnical focus preferred);
• 1-3 years of geotechnical experience.
• Preferred: M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering; Experience in geotechnical or civil engineering.
• Licensure: Current PE license in Nevada or ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire.

Technical Skills:

• Soil mechanics and foundation engineering fundamentals;
• Familiarity with ASTM/AASHTO test standards; proficiency in Microsoft Office;
• Experience with gINT, AutoCAD, or GIS a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, traverse uneven terrain.

Certifications/Licenses:

• Valid driver’s license required.
• Professional Engineering license required or ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire
• OSHA 30, NAQTC Materials Testing is preferred.
