Job summary

Thornton Tomasetti is seeking a Geotechnical Project Engineer in Austin, Texas. You will engage in business development and collaborate with the Forensics Team to deliver technically excellent geotechnical solutions for complex projects.

Responsibilities include field investigations, laboratory testing, data organization, and reporting. Travel within the USA and internationally is expected as part of project support and client engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or geotechnical engineering
  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the USA and internationally

  • Carry out geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing programs.
  • Research historical background of diverse structures and code issues.

  • Perform geotechnical analyses such as bearing capacity, slope stability, and settlement analyses.
  • Provide geotechnical support during construction.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to explain findings to clients.

We assist attorneys, property managers, building owners, contractors, manufacturers, and design professionals with a wide range of engineering and architectural issues.

Your Role

Thornton Tomasetti is currently looking for a Geotechnical Project Engineer in Austin, Texas. In this role, you'll be involved in business development and in projects with our Forensics Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. You will contribute to the strategic growth of our forensic geotechnical practice and providing technical excellence delivering projects to our clients. Projects generally include investigations of existing buildings and design remedial repairs for deficient conditions. The investigations include failure cause and origin analysis, risk loss insurance, claims response, and litigation support.

What You'll Do
  • On-site inspections and investigations including surveying and documenting observations, photographing, and sketching.
  • Conduct geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing programs.
  • Researching the historic background of diverse structures, technical issues, and code issues.
  • Organizes field data to facilitate analysis and problem-solving.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses such as but not limited to bearing capacity, slope stability analysis, and settlement analysis.
  • Provide geotechnical support during construction.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or geotechnical engineering. Master's or PhD in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • Good understanding and knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related disciplines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills (ability to communicate effectively with clients, other disciplines, managers, and other staff).
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a team.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the USA and internationally.
