Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking a Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory intern for Summer 2027 in Chelmsford, MA. You’ll join a dynamic team working on a diverse portfolio of public, federal, and industrial projects.

As an intern, you will perform grain size analysis, moisture content, organic content, Atterberg limits, soil compaction, and consolidation test setups, with additional tests demonstrated and explained as samples are assigned.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled toward a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering.
• Prefers soils mechanics background but training will be provided.
• Internship position with hands-on geotechnical lab exposure.

Responsibilities

• Perform grain size analysis (sieve and hydrometer).
• Measure moisture and organic content.
• Conduct Atterberg limits (plasticity indices).
• Perform soil compaction tests (Proctor) and moisture-density testing.
• Assist with consolidation tests and loading setups; learn advanced tests as assigned.
