Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Staff Geotechnical Engineer for our Birmingham, AL operations. The role blends office-based analysis with field leadership to deliver foundations, slopes, and earth retention solutions, with a focus on timely, quality project delivery.

You will perform advanced geotechnical analyses, supervise borehole logging, coordinate tasks with structural teams, and produce comprehensive reports for clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geology.
• 0–4 years of professional geotechnical experience.
• EIT or GIT certification in Alabama, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
• Hands-on/academic background in foundations, slope stability, settlement, and earth retention.
• Ability to perform geotechnical calculations and interpret subsurface data.
• Knowledge of construction materials testing and ASTM standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex geotechnical analyses for shallow/deep foundations, slope stability, settlement, and earth retention.
• Develop project lifecycles with investigation plans and scopes of work.
• Manage project budgets and schedules to meet milestones.
• Lead field activities: borehole logging, drilling oversight, data verification.
• Observe earthwork and foundation placement to ensure design compliance.
• Prepare and coauthor comprehensive geotechnical reports for clients and engineers.
• Communicate findings clearly to clients, contractors, and internal teams.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks.
